I put my refrigerator on the curb for bulky pickup, but it has not been picked up. Why not?
Appliances are mostly metal and it is recommended they are recycled locally instead of being placed in the landfill. There are metal recyclers in Lewisville that accept drop offs.
They can be found on our recycling page under the "recycling resources" tab.
Because of laws regulating Freon, Republic Services will not pick up your refrigerator unless it has been tagged “freon removed” by a certified technician. Appliance repair shops offer this service. You will have to check the Yellow Pages or Google to find a certified appliance technician to do the Freon removal. Once the freon has been properly removed and the refrigerator tagged, Republic Services will pick it up as bulk waste. But remember -- it is better to recycle appliances than to send them to the landfill.
Where can I find paper shredding services?
If you have a large volume of papers that need shredding, you will have to use a shredding service. Commercial services are often available at office supply stores. The City no longer offers shred days. Shredded paper is NOT accepted in the curbside recycling.

What do I do with my needles and sharps?
Per TCEQ guidance, needles and sharps should be disposed of in a hard plastic or metal container with a tightly secured lid. The container should be labeled "Syringes," "Sharps," or "Needles." When the container is full, seal and reinforce lid with heavy-duty tape. Dispose of sealed container in household trash.
Do I have to clean out my recyclables before putting them in the cart?
All containers should be empty, clean, and dry before recycling. They don't need to be perfect, but if there is food residue, give it a quick rinse! This reduces contamination (recyclable items that become no longer recyclable), which increases the value of the items to be recycled.
Why can't I put plastic grocery bags in my recycling cart?
Residential recycling service providers stipulate what items can be recycled (some providers will put a label on the recycling cart with the items that can be accepted).
In general, plastic bags, plastic wrappers, and flexible plastic packaging are too thin to be recycled with items like plastic bottles and jugs. You can reuse them in your home or return them to your local grocer for recycling.

What will happen to DFW Landfill after it closes?
DFW Landfill is not owned by the City of Lewisville, but by Waste Management of Texas. The landfill is operating at a very low level and will continue until final closure, which is not currently known but in the near future. Type I landfills such as this one typically require a 30-year post-closure care period in which the site is monitored and maintained. Contract language from the agreement between the City of Lewisville and Waste Management dated December 15, 2003, stipulates that the landfill shall upon closure, develop completed excavation areas to a park-like setting reasonably acceptable to the city, and commensurate with a park adjacent to a landfill, with a hike-and-bike trail, fountain, and landscaping. With Waste Management’s approval, the city shall be allowed to use the DFW Landfill property upon completion of final post-closure responsibilities and the excavation areas upon conclusion of the excavation activity.
