Citizen Police Academy
Classes begin Thursday, August 9, and continue through Thursday, November 1. Most classes are held on Thursday evenings at the main LPD facility, 1187 W. Main Street. Classes begin at 7 p.m. and typically run three hours. There is no cost to attend the Citizen Police Academy, but the 13-week course does require a substantial time commitment. Students will not be allowed to graduate if they miss more than three sessions.
Topics of instruction include gang intervention, narcotics, child abuse investigations, K-9 program, Special Weapons and Tactics, and criminal investigations. After graduating from the Citizen Police Academy, anyone who would like to volunteer with the department will be able to apply for the Lewisville “Citizens on Patrol” program.
Four of the classes will be held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon for more hands-on training. Students will spend one day at the department’s firing range, one day studying defensive tactics, one six-hour day attending defensive driving, and one six-hour day becoming certified to administer CPR. One final day of practical exercises allows students to be the officer in controlled scenarios with alumni and officers.
Download the application and release form from the Citizen Police Academy page at cityoflewisville.com. The completed forms must be returned to Capt. Dan Rochelle at Lewisville Police Department by Wednesday, July 25.
