Lewisville Summer Musicals Sets Debut Season at MCL Grand
The debut season of Lewisville Summer Musicals will bring five popular musical plays to the Performance Hall of the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, with performance dates in June, July and August. Season and single-show tickets will go on sale later this month. The shows will be presented by Texas Family Musicals, which already presents popular award-winning musical series in Granbury and Grapevine.

Lewisville Summer Musicals will kick off June 4-5 with three performances of “Dames at Sea” by George Haimsohn, Robin Miller and Jim Wise. This parody of large, flashy 1930s movie musicals originally premiered in 1966 and has been successfully revived in New York, London, community theaters across the country and through a television adaptation.

On July 3-4, audiences will enjoy “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” This was the first British musical theater show written by the team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, later drawing raves during a lengthy Broadway run. The story is based on the Biblical story of Joseph and features some of Broadway’s best-loved songs.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma” is scheduled for four shows July 22-24. First performed in 1943, this American stage classic launched a lengthy and highly successful career for its two creators. Many enduring musical standards come from this show, among them Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin', The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, I Cain't Say No, People Will Say We're in Love, and Oklahoma!.

On Aug. 6-7, Lewisville Summer Musicals will present three shows of “Hello Dolly.” This musical by Jerry Herman was first produced on Broadway in 1964 and the original cast soundtrack has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It has returned to Broadway three times, and a 1969 film version was nominated for seven Academy Awards.

The series finale will be “The Night the Music Died,” a stirring tribute to Texas music legend Buddy Holly who tragically died in a 1959 plane crash. This show, being presented three times on Aug. 13-14, will take the audience back to that fateful night with musical memories from Holly and his fellow crash victims, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens.

Ticket prices for individual shows are $35, $33 and $28, depending on the seating. Groups of 12 or more are $27, $25 and $20 per seat. Season tickets are available at a 20 percent discount from the regular price, giving buyers five shows for the price of four.

All ticket sales will be through Texas Family Musicals at its website, www.Texasfamilymusicals.com. For information, call 800.547.4697.

Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, located at 100 N. Charles Street between Main and Church streets, opened its doors in January. The 40,000-square-foot facility features a 296-seat proscenium theater, black box theater, dance recital hall, art gallery, five art classrooms and a large courtyard. Medical Center of Lewisville reached a multi-year agreement with the city last year for naming rights at the center.
To reach the MCL Grand from Interstate 35E, take exit 452 and proceed east on Main Street to Charles Street. The MCL Grand will be on the left. Free public parking is available along Main and Church streets, or at Lewisville City Hall across Church Street from the center.
