CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE
For the week of:
January 9, 2011

Tickets on Sale for MCL Grand Opening Weekend Events
Tickets are now on sale for three concerts and three catered meals as part of the Jan. 14-16 grand opening weekend at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, Southern Denton County’s first publicly operated arts center. Plans for the three-day event offer both paid and free activities including music and dance performances, a children’s concert, an art display and a formal dedication ceremony for the city-owned facility.

“We’ve been waiting a long time to open the doors to this exciting addition to Old Town Lewisville,” said Mayor Dean Ueckert. “The MCL Grand will boost the quality of life for residents of Lewisville and our neighboring cities, and will increase the profile of cultural arts throughout the region.”

Ticket can be purchased at the Customer Service counter on the first floor of Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, during regular business hours or on-line at www.MCLGrand.tix.com. Seating in the performance hall is limited to 296 people, so purchasing tickets in advance is strongly encouraged.

Construction of the center is nearing completion at 100 N. Charles Street, between Main and Church streets. The 40,000-square-foot facility features a 296-seat proscenium theater, black box theater, dance recital hall, art gallery, five art classrooms and a large courtyard. Medical Center of Lewisville reached a multi-year agreement with the city last year for naming rights at the center.

The grand opening event will begin on Friday, Jan. 14, with a barbecue dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by a blues concert at 8 p.m. by Smokin’ Joe Kubek Band featuring Bnois King, and Anson Funderburg and Friends. Tickets for the dinner are $15 per person, and for the concert are $20 per person.

Activities on Saturday, Jan. 15, include a children’s concert at 10 a.m. by Sara Hickman and Family Time Rocks ($10 for adults, $5 for children); buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. ($25 per person); and jazz concert at 8 p.m. by Ricki Derek and his Big Band ($25 per person). LakeCities Ballet Theater will give a free performance at 2 p.m.

Sunday will feature a brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. ($15 per person) followed by the formal dedication ceremony at 1:30 p.m. that will include performances by Lewisville Lake Symphony and Lewisville Civic Chorale.

The first exhibit in the MCL Grand art gallery also will debut during the opening weekend, presenting “plein aire” paintings by members of the Visual Art League (VAL). There will be a free opening reception at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15. The exhibit, titled “Fresh Air - Scenes from LLELA,” is a collaboration of VAL, the City of Lewisville and the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area. League artists employed a variety of media and styles to highlight different aspects of the 2,000-acre LLELA preserve. The show will run through Feb. 19.

Guided tours of the building will be offered all three days, and other free activities are planned throughout the weekend. For additional details, please visitwww.cityoflewisville.com.
