CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE Police Officers Receive Police Medals of Valor Lewisville Police Officers Christopher Clements and Shawn Dority were presented with Police Medals of Valor at the City Council meeting on December 19, 2011. Chief Russ Kerbow read the following letter detailing the incident: “In the early morning hours on September 24, 2011, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Officer Clements observed a car that was driving erratically and suspected the driver was intoxicated. Officer Clements stopped the car on Oakridge Boulevard. He contacted the driver and began conducting an investigation for driving while intoxicated. Officer Clements asked the suspect to exit his vehicle, but instead the suspect started his vehicle in an effort to drive away. Officer Clements sprayed the suspect with his Pepper spray as he drove away. Officer Clements pursued the suspect in the neighborhood near Mill Street and Lake Park Road when Officer Dority joined the pursuit. The suspect continued to flee officers before returning to Oakridge Boulevard. At the intersection of Oakridge and Monti, the suspect stopped and quickly exited his car. The suspect immediately began shooting at the officers. Officers Clements and Dority returned fire at the suspect. The suspect received gunshot wounds by the officer’s return fire before dropping his pistol and falling to the ground. Unharmed by the suspect’s gunfire, Officers Clements and Dority immediately went towards the suspect as another officer cleared the suspect’s vehicle. Officer Dority kicked the suspect’s weapon away from him. Once the suspect was handcuffed, Officers Clements and Dority worked together as a team to treat the suspect’s wounds and apply first aid. They applied two tourniquets to stop the bleeding from the gunshot wounds. Officers continued to apply first aid to the suspect until relieved by Lewisville Fire Department Paramedics. A pursuit in and of itself can be a stressful situation, but a shooting incident is one of the most traumatic events that an officer can encounter. This incident was extremely stressful and occurred very rapidly. The officers involved did not hesitate as they performed the necessary tasks to identify and neutralize the threat to public safety, and then provided first aid to the suspect. These officers exhibited courage and bravery while carrying out their duties, which is a credit to their character and professionalism and is in keeping with the highest tradition of the police service.” Christmas Tree Recycling Program Runs Through Jan. 18 Recycling Christmas trees helps to reduce waste, extend landfill life, provides useful compost and saves money.
