CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE
For the week of:
April 10, 2011

Recycling Moves to a Once-a-Week Schedule
On April 4, residential recycling in Lewisville moved from an every other week schedule to a once-a-week schedule. The schedule is available on-line at www.cityoflewisville.com. Only the materials accepted in Lewisville’s recycling program can be placed in the cart. There are many items that are made of recyclable material, but some are not accepted at the recovery facility that processes the City’s curbside recyclables. Put only the City’s list of accepted items in your recycling cart.

City recycling is not currently required at apartment complexes. City Council is researching a recycling program for apartment complexes citywide. In the meantime, apartment residents can recycle by taking materials to any of these free dropoff sites:
• Memorial Park Recreation Center, 1950 South Valley Parkway
• Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street
• Fire Station #5, 651 Waters Ridge
• Residential Convenience Center, 330 W. Jones Street
• College Street Park, 595 W. College Street (Paper only)

For information regarding materials that may and may not be recycled, or for other information on recycling, contact Environmental Programs at 972.219.3503.

She explained the law and the questions that can and cannot be asked.

DCTA Begins Test Run Trains on A-Train Commuter Line
On Monday, April 4, the Denton County Transportation Authority began testing its trains, signals and communications equipment on the southern section of the A-train corridor. Vehicle and equipment testing is the first phase of operations in preparation for revenue service of the Authority’s regional rail system in late June.

Herzog Transit Services, DCTA’s contract operator, began running trains on the newly completed tracks between Carrollton and Lewisville Lake. Testing will be conducted during daylight hours. As part of testing, the train vehicles will routinely sound the train horn near all rail crossings.

“Seeing the A-train running up and down the rail corridor shows that we are close to opening our service to the public,” stated Tom LeBeau, Vice President of Rail Development. “Because rail activity is new to many of our residents, we want them to know that these tracks are now active and to expect a train at anytime.”

DCTA will open additional areas for testing north of Lewisville Lake in a few weeks once the crossing and signal work is complete. As testing begins, DCTA will increase its efforts to discourage trespassing along the rail corridor. DCTA has a full-time Denton County Sherriff’s Deputy patrolling the corridor and is also working with municipal police to enforce the “no trespassing” zones.

“Trespassing along the rail corridor is not only dangerous but it’s illegal and DCTA will prosecute those individuals cited for trespassing by law enforcement personnel,” stressed LeBeau. “Safety of our community, our passengers and our staff is our top priority.”
