CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE Public Meeting to be Held Regarding Urban Wildlife Wildlife expert Bonnie Bradshaw will hold a free public meeting on dealing with coyotes and other urban wildlife on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 6 p.m. at the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. Social Service Funding Available, Deadlines for Applications Set The City of Lewisville has announced the availability of funding from the Community Development Block Grant and City Social Service Agency Fund programs. The 2011 Request for Proposals for Social Service funding is available. The combined funding available for social services is estimated at $265,265 based on the current year budget, but will not be certain until federal notification of awards and City Council budget approval. Cuts to CDBG are being considered by Congress at this time. Funds are available for a one-year grant cycle beginning October 1. Applicants should attend a pre-application conference. Both opportunities will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, or Wednesday, March 2. Applications will be due Thursday, March 17, by noon, and Agency Presentations will be held Saturday, March 26. Lewisville to Participate in Statewide Warrant Round-up Representatives of law enforcement agencies and courts from more than 240 jurisdictions across Texas announced today combined efforts to host the fifth annual Great Texas Warrant Roundup beginning Saturday, March 5. The roundup is designed to target thousands of defendants with traffic, parking, city ordinance, penal code and higher charge warrants from participating jurisdictions. It is believed to be the largest joint operation of its kind with arrests expected to continue for several days. Hundreds of thousands of notices were recently mailed statewide by participating entities. Numerous counties, justices of the peace, constables and municipalities of all sizes will participate in the roundup. Specific information as to the number of outstanding warrants, how to take care of warrants prior to arrest, and any other special roundup activities or events may be obtained by contacting the representative for each agency. Affected persons are urged to contact the appropriate jurisdiction or jurisdictions during the next two weeks to dispose of their cases voluntarily to avoid the inconvenience of arrest at home or work. Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting The Planning and Zoning Commission approved the following two plats at their February 15 meeting: - Final Plat of the Lambert Addition, Lot 1, Block A, a 0.296 acre tract zoned Single-Family Residential (R-7.5), located on the east side of Poydras Street at its southern terminus. - Final Plat of Metro Auto Auction Dallas Addition, Lot 1, Block A, a 30.64 acre tract zoned Light Industrial (LI), located on the south side of Midway Road, between Barfknecht Road and Holfords Prairie Road. Community Development Block Grant Advisory Board Meeting The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Advisory Board held a public hearing on February 15, 2011, which had been rescheduled due to cancellation of the November 30, 2011 meeting. Thirteen residents attended and all attendees were from Target Reinvestment Improvement Neighborhoods (TRAIN) or had family members living in those areas. Co-Chair Leroy Vaughn opened the hearing to comments regarding community needs. Several residents inquired about the City of Lewisville’s Housing Rehabilitation Program that will begin this year and signed up to be contacted when the application for assistance is available. Other comments included the need for curb and gutter construction on Milton, a public restroom at Sycamore Park, regulation of the cars parked on the easements at Hardy Street, and community projects to improve the appearance of neighborhoods. Inaugural Single Artist Show at MCL Grand Theater Opens March 4 The works of Bob Nunn, “A Different View,” will be the inaugural showing for a single artist in the gallery at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street. The show will run from March 4 to April 9, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. To schedule group visits during other hours, call 972.219.3401. A Dallas native and lifelong educator, Bob Nunn has maintained his studio in Dallas' fabled "Deep Ellum" district for almost 40 years and is acknowledged as one of the pioneer Deep Ellum artists. For more information on the artist, please visit http://www.nunnstudio.com/ Women’s History Celebrated at Library This March, the Lewisville Public Library celebrates Women's History with a special exhibit about the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII, the first women in history to fly for the United States military. This unique traveling exhibit consists of educational panels and artifacts, including WASP uniforms and documents. The display will be at the library throughout the month of March. The library will also screen the documentary, Fly Girls, on March 26 at 2:00pm. The film describes the WASP experience, including their training right here in North Texas! Come to the library in March to learn more about these daring women. Senior Center St. Patrick's Day Luncheon - The Lewisville Senior Activity Center will hold a St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon on Wednesday, March 16th, at 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Recreation Center. Corned beef & cabbage will be served and guests are encouraged to bring a side, salad or dessert to share. The all-female group, Cór Gaeilge Texais, will be singing traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, a cappella style. Cost is only $2. Be sure to wear your kelly green and bring your Irish spirit! The Scion Skatepark and Dog Park Move to "Summer Hours" The Skatepark and Dog Park at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park move to extended/non-winter hours beginning March 1st. Winter hours (November 1 - February 28) were 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.. Hours of operation from March 1 - October 31 are 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. Sports Leagues Open Spring Seasons Lake Park, Vista Ridge and Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park athletic facilities are active again with the start of adult & youth sports leagues. GLASA and the Lake Highlands Classic League began play on February 19th at TOL Railroad and Lake Parks. Adult Softball begins its season on Monday March 7 at Vista Ridge and Lake Park with men's and co-ed league play. The Lewisville Baseball Association (baseball/softball) began team practices on the 24th and season openers are scheduled for April 2nd. High School Lacrosse continues its season at Vista Ridge Park until the end of April. Fire Department News Chief Engineer Edgar Covey completed over 28 different tests to become a Master Ambulance Technician and Master Fire Apparatus Technician. Registration Begins for Collegiate Fishing Championship on Lewisville Lake Collegiate anglers throughout the country are able to register online for the 2011 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship. Registration will close on May 1 and the final field will be announced on May 5. Due to the incredible growth in the number of contestants since 2006, the 2011 championship field will be capped at 150 two-person teams. Lewisville once again will host this prestigious event that features a week of activities culminating with the crowning of the 2011 national champions. The event will get underway the evening of May 24 when the competitors gather for Cabela's Collegiate Night at the company's Ft. Worth retail store. Every collegiate team in attendance will enjoy a shopping spree with several top professional anglers on hand providing seminars and shopping assistance. In addition to the shopping spree provided by Cabela's, each team competing in the event will receive a travel allowance. Numerous prizes, including incentive awards provided by sponsors, will be awarded to the top finishers. On the evening of May 25, competitors will attend the sponsor appreciation national championship banquet held at the Lewisville Convention Center. Sponsor representatives will display their products and services while providing the anglers with samples and information. Competition begins on May 26 and concludes with the crowning of the 2011 national champions on May 27. All tournament day activities are open to the public and will take place at Sneaky Pete's on the shores of Lake Lewisville. “Fishing is a family-friendly sport that everyone can enjoy, and Lewisville Lake is a prime spot for thousands of recreational anglers every year,” said Mayor Dean Ueckert. “The anglers participating in the highly competitive BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship event are very skilled. Some of these students are the big-name pros of tomorrow. We're excited about welcoming them to Lewisville in May.” Extensive television coverage of the championship event will air on the Versus network from August through October of this year. Each episode will premiere on a Sunday afternoon and repeat during the week. The television series will also feature coverage of the Big Bass Bash presented by Hydrowave, the Collegiate Bass Fishing Open presented by Pepsi and several regional events sanctioned by the Association of Collegiate Anglers. Alley Repairs – Rocky Point The City of Lewisville has contracted Stark Built Ltd. to make repairs to the alley at the east entrance off Rocky Point. Access from the west entrance of Rocky Point will still be available during this time, and all residents will still be able to access their rear drive entrance. Work is scheduled to begin on Thursday, February 24 and be completed by Friday, March 4, weather permitting. Due to repairs, trash will be picked up in front of residences until work is completed. Alley Repairs Between Hilltop Dr. and Cliffview Dr. The City of Lewisville has contracted Stark Built Ltd. to make repairs to the alley between Hilltop Dr. and Cliffview Dr. Access from the south entrance off Highpoint will still be available to residents. Work is scheduled to begin on Thursday, February 24 and be completed by Friday, March 4, weather permitting. 1889 Hilltop Dr., 1890 Hilltop Dr., 1888 Cliffview Dr., and 1890 Cliffview Dr. will not have access to rear parking during this repair. Please make other arrangements for parking during this repair time. Due to repairs, trash will be picked up in front of residences until work is completed. Alley Repairs Between San Antone Drive and Juniper Lane The City of Lewisville street division will be making alley repairs between San Antone Dr. and Juniper Ln. The alley will be closed to through traffic. Homeowners can enter from Garden Ridge Blvd. or Juniper Ln. Construction is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, and be completed Friday, March 4, 2011 weather permitting. This will require that trash be placed in front of the residences until the work has been completed. Alley Repairs Between Ruidoso Run and Maxwell Dr. The City of Lewisville has contracted Stark Built Ltd. to make repairs to the alley between Ruidoso Run and Maxwell Dr. Access from the north entrance off Aspen and south entrance off Reno Run will still be available to residents. Work is scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 3, and be completed by Wednesday, March 9, weather permitting. 1911 Ruidoso Run, 1913 Ruidoso Run, 1928 Maxwell Dr., and 1930 Maxwell Dr. will not have access to rear parking during this repair. Please make other arrangements for parking during this repair time. Due to repairs, trash will be picked up in front of residences until work is completed.
