Lewisville K-9 Team Works Super Bowl Security The Super Bowl brings together the best teams in football, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives brought its best K-9 teams to North Texas. Lewisville Fire Department Investigator Terry McGrath and K-9 Retha, one of 25 K9 teams, helped provide security for Super Bowl XLV on Feb. 6. “Everything’s bigger in Texas and this Super Bowl was no exception. With more than 100 specially trained personnel, ATF had more resources dedicated to this Super Bowl than in previous years,” said Dallas ATF Special Agent in Charge Robert Champion. “No one agency can secure the hundreds of thousands of fans who were in the Dallas area this week. The ATF canines are just one of the many tools law enforcement has in place to assure public safety.” McGrath and Retha conducted security sweeps at this year’s Super Bowl to locate any type of explosive, firearm or ammunition that may be in close proximity to the stadium or other venue relating to the big game. ATF certified K9s are paired with special agents or local law enforcement officer handlers who worked side-by-side with other public safety officers to keep the football teams and fans safe. ATF has used its explosives detecting canines at other special events including the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, the Presidential Inauguration, the G-8, the World Series, NASCAR, the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and of course, previous Super Bowls. ATF’s program, which began in 1986, uses only Labrador retrievers. The dogs are supplied by the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, the Guide Dog Foundation, and Canine Companions for Independence. These specialty canines, with their handlers, attend a 10-week training program conducted at the ATF National Canine Training and Operations Center in Front Royal, Va. Upon completion of this course, the canines are able to detect a variety of explosive compounds and materials that could be used in an explosive device. The canines can also detect firearms and ammunition and are used in the more traditional protective search and sweep operations. Once the canine and the handler complete the ATF basic training course, they begin their field work and continue to train on a daily basis. Bassmaster Central Opens Kicks Off on Lewisville Lake Feb. 24 The Bassmaster Central Opens will kick off Feb. 24-26 – the week after the 2011 Bassmaster Classic – on Lewisville Lake. The event will be hosted by the Lewisville Convention & Visitors Bureau with the Grapevine Bass Pro landing the final-day weigh in. “The Opens continue to be an attractive option for anglers looking to compete on productive fisheries against top-notch participants,” said Tom Ricks, general manager and vice president, BASS. A full field will compete the first two days, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 24-25. Only the top 12 in the pro and co-angler divisions will compete on Saturday, the final day. Daily launches are set for 6:45 a.m., at Lewisville Lake Park, 100 E. Lake Park Road. Day 1 and Day 2 weigh-ins will be at Lewisville Lake Park. Start time is 3 p.m. Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine will host the final weigh-in at 3:45 p.m. The Bass Pro address is 2501 Bass Pro Drive, Grapevine. All launches and weigh-ins are open to the public, and there's no charge to attend. Bassmaster.com will provide full tournament coverage, including streaming video and real-time leaderboards from the weigh-in each day. Also planned are B.A.S.S.Cam video reports, daily analysis and results, and online photo galleries. Also, B.A.S.S. has teamed up with two U.S. Marine Corps veterans to provide a fishing opportunity for wounded soldiers on Feb. 26 during the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open event in Lewisville, Texas. While the Central Open finalists fish on Lewisville Lake, recovering soldiers from the Warrior Family & Support Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, will be paired with Bassmaster Open anglers for a day of friendly competition on Lake Grapevine. About 15 three-angler teams will participate in the Wounded Warrior Benefit Tournament, according to Chris Bowes, B.A.S.S. senior tournament manager. One of the team members will be a pro who provides the boat, and the other two team members will be soldiers. Each boat can bring in one five-fish limit of legal-length bass (14-inch minimum). There are no entry fees and no big prizes, Bowes said, but braggin' rights are on the line. The teams will officially weigh their fish on the Bassmaster stage on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Grapevine, Texas, Bass Pro Shops location, followed by the Central Open finale weigh-in at 3:45 p.m.
