CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE
For the week of:
November 6, 2011

Lewisville Gallery Extends Popular HollisWilliford Art Exhibit
Due to strong attendance since it opened in late September, “The Art of the American West,” a retrospective of the works of noted artist Hollis R. Williford, has been extended through Dec. 17 in the Gallery at MCL Grand in Lewisville, Texas. The show had been scheduled to close this weekend.

The gallery is located inside the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street, in the heart of historic Old Town Lewisville. Admission is free. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. To schedule group visits during other hours, call 972-219-8446.

The exhibit, assembled by Sculptureworks, focuses on bronze sculpture pieces but also includes some of Williford’s works in other media, including pencil, oils and etchings.

“Hollis Williford was one of the preeminent Western artists of his generation, possibly of any generation,” said MCL Grand manager Jim Wear. “We are extremely fortunate to be able to bring this exhibit to Lewisville, and now to extend its stay by another six weeks. It is a beautiful, nationally significant show right here in Old Town Lewisville.”

Born into a farming family in north central Texas in 1940, Williford began sculpting on 10-cent bars of Ivory soap. He studied at the University of Texas at Arlington, North Texas State University and Art Center College of Art & Design in Los Angeles. Williford won the National Academy of Western Art’s gold medal and its Prix de West Purchase Award in 1980, and won two more gold medals in 1986 for his sculpture and drawings of an Eskimo pursuing a caribou herd by kayak. That winning piece of bronze sculpture and the winning sketch both are included in the Lewisville exhibit.

“I’m celebrating living forms in motion,” Williford said prior to his death in 2007. “The final piece must reflect design, mass, kinetics and flow. I push my pieces to the limit of thrust. A lot of my subjects feature such dynamic action, but it’s even harder to achieve subtle, graceful motion.”

Lewisville Animal Services will host its first off-site pet adoption event, “Paws in the Park,” on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the northeast parking lot of Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park. In addition to Lewisville Animal Shelter adoptable dogs, invitees include animal rescue organizations and their adoptable dogs, other local municipal animal shelters with their adoptable pets, local veterinarians, pet supply product and pet service vendors, the Lewisville Police K-9 unit and more.

Lewisville Animal Services staff will be on hand to direct vendor setup, adopt dogs, take names for future volunteers, answer questions and hand out pet giveaways.

EAS alerts will be transmitted over television and radio broadcast, satellite television and satellite radio, cable television and wireline video services. The test will be a significant interruption of regular television programming. It will run for about three minutes and should be seen on all channels.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful Awards Grant, Provides Free Light Bulbs
Keep Lewisville Beautiful recently awarded the Lewisville Lions Club a $500 Adult Beautification grant for an outdoor beautification and community improvement project planting native trees and crepe myrtles in the northeast corner of Central Park, in partnership with Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services.

“We are excited to be able to provide the Lions Club funds to help with this beautification project,” says Amy Wells, Executive Director for Keep Lewisville Beautiful. “KLB hopes to partner with them again in future projects that beautify and green our community. The trees that they will be planting are part of a nationwide Lions Club effort to plant over a million trees in 2011—a goal that Lewisville Lion Nancy Chipman said has already been reached by Lions Clubs across the country.”

Each year, Keep Lewisville Beautiful sponsors four adult grants and four youth grants for projects that reflect Litter Prevention, Beautification/Community Improvement, Waste Reduction, Resource Conservation and Environmental Education. For more information about grant opportunities, call KLB at 972-538-5949, email to info@keeplewisvillebeautiful.org, or visit www.keeplewisvillebeautiful.org.

Also, Keep Lewisville Beautiful is giving out free CFL light bulb four-packs to Lewisville residents to help reduce the use of electricity in Lewisville. First Choice Power awarded KLB a $2,000 “Reduce Your Use” grant earlier this year, making the program possible.

To get the bulbs, residents can go by the KLB offices at 101 W. Main Street, Suite 102, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
