CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE
For the week of:
September 18, 2011

Meeting to Discuss DCTA Wayside Horns Set for Sept. 27
On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Denton County Transportation Authority will host a public meeting at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, to discuss the use of wayside horns along the A-train corridor within the city limits of Lewisville. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a brief presentation by DCTA representatives and will follow with a question and answer and public comment period. Wayside horns were installed at some intersections along the A-train corridor to eliminate the use of the train horn at the rail crossings. DCTA and the city are now working together to further improve safety and eliminate the use of wayside horns wherever feasible. The presentation will identify the additional supplemental safety measures being recommended; detail the process to amend the city’s existing quiet zone application and outline the timing for the elimination of the wayside horns at Bennett Lane, Business 121, Purnell Street and Main Street in Lewisville.

Lewisville Gallery to Exhibit Works of Hollis Williford
“The Art of the American West,” a retrospective of the works of noted artist Hollis R. Williford, will be exhibited in the Gallery at MCL Grand from Sept. 23 through Nov. 5. The gallery is located inside the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street, in the heart of historic Old Town Lewisville. Admission is free. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. To schedule group visits during other hours, call 972.219.8446.

The exhibit, assembled by Sculptureworks, will focus on bronze sculpture pieces but also will include some of Williford’s works in other media, including pencil, oils and etchings. Born into a farming family in north central Texas in 1940, Williford began sculpting on 10-cent bars of Ivory soap. He studied at the University of Texas at Arlington, North Texas State University and the Art Center College of Art & Design in Los Angeles. In 1980, Williford won the National Academy of Western Art’s gold medal and its Prix de West Purchase Award. He won two more gold medals in 1986 for his sculpture and drawings of an Eskimo pursuing a caribou herd by kayak.

His list of artistic achievements is long and impressive, but it is the depth of the artist and the love shown for his subjects that leaves a continuing impression.

“I’m celebrating living forms in motion,” Williford said prior to his death in 2007. “The final piece must reflect design, mass, kinetics and flow. I push my pieces to the limit of thrust. A lot of my subjects feature such dynamic action, but it’s even harder to achieve subtle, graceful motion.”

The exhibit opening coincides with the two-day Western Days festival, an annual event started in 1964 that celebrates the Western heritage of Lewisville. Festival activities include live music, Western re-enactments and more. For festival information, please visit www.LewisvilleWesternDays.com.

Hank Williams Tribute to Take the Stage at MCL Grand
The tumultuous life, and final concert, of country music legend Hank Williams will be brought to life on the Performance Hall stage of the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater when Texas Family Musicals presents “There’ll Be No Sad Songs” for three shows on Oct. 1-2.

Ticket prices range from $26 to $35, depending on the seating, and discounts are available for groups of 12 or more. Tickets can be purchased through Texas Family Musicals at its website, www.Texasfamilymusicals.com. For information, call 800.547.4697.

Show times are 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1; and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2.

“There’ll Be No Sad Songs” stars talented singer and actor Kevin Kratzke, who is best known for his haunting portrayal of Buddy Holly in the long-running “The Night the Music Died” at MCL Grand and other North Texas theaters. He thrills audiences in this show with his soulful presentation of one of country music’s brightest stars and most heart-wrenching tragic tales.

Back on Dec. 19, 1952, the 314 people crowded into the popular Austin Skyline Club were totally unaware that they were watching the last concert of a future legend. This historical concert is lovingly recreated by the cast of “There’ll Be No Sad Songs.” The show also touches on the pain of the troubled star as he struggles to make it through the performance.

“We can’t overlook the pain and suffering Hank Williams endured due to his addictions, but we quickly move the show in an uplifting direction in order to celebrate the positive image of Hank Williams due to the public’s love of his music and artistry,” said Mike Skiles, executive producer of Texas Family Musicals.

The show is directed by Sam DiRosa, who is known for his ability to draw the most entertainment value out of any production. Joining Hank and the other singers on stage will be the New Drifter band who will make Hank Williams’ songs feel brand new again.

Wilhelm Assists with Coordinating Wildfire Response
Summer Wilhelm, Emergency Management Coordinator, assisted the State's Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) Coordinator with coordinating the wildfire response to multiple fires last week. With multiple fires requiring statewide assistance occurring at one time, additional resources were needed to coordinate those efforts. Summer responded to the TIFMAS coordination center being housed in the Coppell EOC and was able to assist through the development of a website that managed the available resources, active resources, and authorizations for each fire. Additionally, she assisted with developing four additional strike teams, pulling resources from across the State to assist with additional fires.
