In addition to the three events, the American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are suggested and can be made through the city website (www.cityoflewisville.com) on the Special Events page, or at www.givelife.org, using sponsor code “lewisville.” Appointments also can be made by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. Multiple vendors have signed on to offer quality selections of fresh peaches, apples, plums, eggs, caster bean plants, jalapeno jelly, carrots, herbs, onions, sweet potatoes, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, pasta, herbs and more.

Younger market visitors will find plenty to enjoy through children’s activities such as coloring Art Trading Cards, making bird feeders, planting seeds and pony rides.

The popular Tailwaggers Ranch also will be on hand, with displays and activities conducted by DFW Pug Rescue, Hickory Creek Animal Services, Lewisville Animal Services, Lone Star Pyrs and Paws and Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue. Great Dane Rescue of North Texas will offer on-site pet microchipping for $20 per animal.

Cinco de Mayo
Organized by Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory and sponsored by the City of Lewisville, the Cinco de Mayo festival will include live music and dance performances, food, arts and crafts, vehicle displays, children’s activities and more. Vendor and sponsor applications still are being accepted.

The Latino Club Dancers from Lewisville High School will perform on stage at noon. Havana NRG, a Latin jazz and salsa band that has drawn large crowds to past performances in Lewisville, will take the stage at 3:30 p.m. and play until the close of the festival.

The local event was moved to Main Street last year and drew one of its largest crowds ever, with about 2,000 people coming to Old Town for the event.

Admission is free. Visitors are asked to make a donation of $1 to the Cinco De Mayo Scholarship Fund, or bring canned food and household paper goods for Christian Community Action. Festival organizers hope to raise enough money to present at least two $500 college scholarships to graduating Lewisville ISD students of Mexican descent. Eleven scholarships have been awarded during the past six years.

Cinco de Mayo is a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, which was fought on May 5, 1862. On that day, an army of 4,000 Mexican nationalists defeated a French-commanded army of more than 8,000 men. That victory launched a campaign that eventually drove the French out of Mexico and restored Mexican independence (which is celebrated in Mexico on Sept. 16). Many historians also credit the victory in Puebla with keeping the French army in Mexico from joining the Confederate forces in the Civil War.

Festival volunteers are needed to help in several areas of the event. For event information, please call 972.436.4333 or visit www.cityoflewisville.com.

City Watch Event
The city’s new Crime Watch Board, composed of resident volunteers from throughout the community, will hold a new event on May 2 designed to involve the public in reducing crime through educational materials and an expansion of Crime Watch and similar programs.

The inaugural event will include displays of vehicles and equipment from the police and fire departments, the Fire Safety House for children, demonstrations of police and fire techniques, and take-home materials on personal and family safety.

The Lewisville Crime Watch Board is dedicated to helping law enforcement make Lewisville a safer and more enjoyable place to live. The group is working closely with Lewisville police and elected officials on coordinated efforts existing and new Crime Watch groups to form a citywide net that discourages criminals from operating in Lewisville.

For information, call Police Sgt. Gordon Blair at 972.219.5009.

KLB Schedules 23rd Annual Spring Cleanup
Volunteers are needed for the 23rd annual Keep Lewisville Beautiful citywide cleanup to be held Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. The local event is being held in conjunction with the Keep Texas Beautiful Trash Off and the Keep American Beautiful Great America Clean Up. Volunteers are needed for clean up teams and on-site help.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of Lewisville High School, 1098 W. Main Street. Cleanup teams will then go to their assigned locations around the city to collect litter and other trash, returning at noon for lunch and door prizes. Trash bags, gloves and grabbers will be provided.

Last year’s cleanup collected 4.6 tons of trash from medians, roadways and greenbelts. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to sign up as individuals or groups to help make this year’s effort even more successful. Those wanting to participate but unavailable on May 9 are invited to organize their own cleanup or Adopt-A-Spot through KLB.

Local businesses also are encouraged to show their support for a cleaner community by having employees clean the grounds outside the business, closing dumpster lids, and having plenty of trash receptacles for customers to use.

For volunteer or donation information, please send e-mail to info@keeplewisvillebeautiful.org or call 972.436.5100.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Texas Beautiful, is the city’s longest-standing and most successful environmental organization, committed to educating Lewisville residents to take greater responsibility for enhancing their community.
