Wastewater treatment is the process of removing contaminants from water that has been used by the community. Wastewater is created by residences, institutions, hospitals and commercial and industrial establishments. Wastewater is collected and transported from these sources through a network of pipes and pump stations to the wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater collection and treatment is subject to local, state and federal regulations and standards. Industrial sources of wastewater are monitored by the Environment Control Services Division to ensure no adverse effects occur through the transport, treatment or bypass through of contaminants to the receiving waters.

Wastewater treatment includes physical, chemical and biological processes to remove contaminants. Its objective is to produce treated water or effluent and a solid waste or sludge that are suitable for discharge or reuse back into the environment. The City of Lewisville's Wastewater Treatment Plant is designed and permitted to handle a wastewater capacity of 12 Million Gallons per Day.
