Tailwaggers Ranch pet activities return to Western Day festival

Four-legged festival-goers will play a large role in Lewisville’s Western Day event being held Saturday, Sept. 27, in Old Town Lewisville. Planned activities at the popular Tailwaggers Ranch pet area will include contests, demonstrations and even a yoga class for dogs.

Other festival activities at the family event, designed to showcase Lewisville’s rich history, include a Main Street parade, two festival stages of live music, arts and crafts vendors, gunfight re-enactments, trick ropers, car show, Longhorn cattle drive, baking and grilling competitions, Stickhorse Rodeo for kids, and the third annual World Tamale Eating Championship.

Free shuttle parking will be available at First Baptist Church of Lewisville from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Tailwaggers Ranch will be open throughout the festival (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) at the northwest corner of Church and Charles streets, offering information, products and contests for pets. There also will be doggie pools and other ongoing activities for pets and their owners. Some participating groups also will offer on-site pet adoptions. Great Dane Rescue will offer pet microchipping for $20 per animal, including the implanting procedure and registration

At 10 a.m., Blue Anjou yoga studio in Old Town will conduct a free session of DOGA (doggie yoga) for pets and their owners. Volunteers with the Gifted Animal Program will conduct service animal demonstrations at 10:30 a.m, noon and 2 p.m.

Pet games will be held at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. with prizes awarded for waggiest tale, best dressed, owner look-alike, best trick, best bark, most kissable and other categories. To enter, animals must have proof of current rabies vaccination. Lewisville pet owners also must show proof that their animal is registered, or they can register on site with city officials and save the $5 annual permit fee. Doggie contest sponsors include Old Town Business Association, Kenny and Amy Roberts, and Ethel Chaney.

Participating groups include City of Lewisville Animal Services, Coppell Humane Society, Denton County Petsitters Association, Gifted Animal Program, Golden Retriever Rescue, Great Dane Rescue, Hickory Creek Animal Services, Hope Humane Society, Humane Society of Flower Mound, Operation Kindness, Southern States Rotweiller Rescue Texas Italian Greyhound Rescue, Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue and Texas Tailwaggers.

Western Day activities (including a children’s area, craft vendors, live music, and Western-style re-enactments and demonstrations) will start at 10 a.m. and end with the Eli Young Band concert from 6:30 to 8 p.m.. Other scheduled performers on the main stage include Derek Sholl at 2 p.m. and Casey Donahew at 4:30 p.m.

The popular Western Day Parade will begin at 3 p.m. The one-mile parade route runs from Cowen Street east on Main Street to Mill Street, then south to DeLay Middle School. Parade applications are available at www.cityoflewisville.com.
