LEWISVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT
PUBLIC EDUCATION
DIVISION

The Lewisville Fire Department is pleased to offer outreach programs to the community designed to promote fire safety through a variety of educational mediums. Fire safety education offers lectures, educational entertainment for children, and fire safety demonstrations. For future information on our free educational programs or to schedule an event, please contact the Lewisville Fire Department at (972) 219-3739.

Fire Safety Skits: Every year during the month of October, we design a fire safety skit that is tailored to fit the current events of that year. We then take this to the elementary schools and the firefighters put on this skit during a general assembly.

The Safety Maze (The Great Escape): Built in 1990 to be a temporary safety house until the House of Safety was built; it has become a valuable asset working in conjunction with the House of Safety. The Great Escape teaches children of all ages that you must crawl low and feel your way through the dark passageways. The maze was totally remodeled in 1998. It now includes an on-board generator, air conditioning, IR cameras (cameras that see in the dark), VCR, intercom system, smoke system, and fire simulation system set off by sensors. The Great Escape is excellent for large crowds and is available for use upon request.

House of Safety: Built in 1992, with generous donations from area businesses and clubs, this two-story house on wheels is complete with theatrical smoke, strobe lights, upstairs and downstairs bedrooms, and kitchen. This program targets the third graders by going into all the elementary schools teaching the techniques of escaping a house fire from upstairs or downstairs. Students are given education in their classroom then brought out to the HOUSE OF SAFETY where they put into action what they have just learned.

Smoke Detector/Battery Program: Every Engine and Truck is equipped with a smoke detector kit. This kit consists of smoke detectors (donated by area merchants), batteries (donated by Eveready Battery Company), and tools to mount and service the equipment. When an Engine or Truck responds to a call, we also check the residence for smoke detector service and replace as necessary. Before the need arises, we are happy to respond to a citizen’s address and check the status of their smoke detector. During the year we make an effort to reach our senior citizen’s with a fresh battery or replace their aging equipment with a fresh smoke detector.

“Lil’ Squirt House”: Children get the opportunity to knock down wooden flames attached to the top of a mini house no bigger than a medium size doghouse.

“Clowns”: Our public education clowns are a great asset for entertaining the children while teaching them about fire safety.

“The Fire Pup”: This is a life-size Dalmatian costume that a firefighter wears to schools when he does fire safety education.

“Patches the Pumper”: This robotic Dalmatian on a battery powered fire truck is a great addition to our program and reaches young children that are difficult to reach with our other programs.

Open House: This annual event occurs in October during National Fire Safety Week. Area merchants donate food and various trucks, boats, and apparatus are on display. There are fire house tours, displays and hourly demonstrations. You will get a chance to see the most of the programs previously mentioned on this page.

Visits from Santa: Did you ever wonder what Santa does before Christmas? He is a firefighter! Santa visits Lewisville neighborhoods atop his fire truck sleigh and spreads holiday cheer and yummy treats which area merchants donate. Look for him in the weeks before Christmas.

Fire Station Tours: Come by any time and visit your local fire house. We encourage larger groups to schedule an appointment by calling or emailing Chief Carter.

During the tour you will see where the firefighters work and live, learning about the working environment and requirements, and their commitment to your community.
