Employee and Dependent Sick/Funeral Leave Policy


Purpose

To provide all regular, full-time employees with paid days off from work to use during a period of personal illness or injury, to care for ill family members as defined and to attend the funeral of an immediate family member as defined.

Summary

Eligibility/Accrual:
  • Immediately
  • 10 Hours/month = 15 Days/year
  • Eligible employees accrue leave at the end of each pay period.
  • Employees must complete one full pay period before accruals begin.

    Uses:
  • Employee's Own Illness
  • Employee's Own Health Care Appointments
  • To Care for Employee's Ill Child or Spouse
  • Maternity Disability
  • Events Which Qualify Under the Family and Medical Leave Act
  • To Attend Funeral of an Immediate Family Member As Defined by Policy

    Notification:
  • Unexpected Illness - Prior to Start of Each Work Day
  • Planned Medical Treatment - 30 Days or As Soon As Reasonably Possible

    The total number of hours an employee may accrue is 1,600 hours (200 days) for employees working a 40 hour week and 2,400 hours for fire fighters working an average 56 hour week.

    In the case of funeral leave, an immediate family member is defined as father, mother, stepfather, stepmother, spouse, child, grandparent, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, stepchild, grandparent-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, uncle, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, son-in-law and daughter-in-law.

    Upon separation, an employee who has accrued a minimum of 240 hours (30 days) shall be paid for up to 720 hours (90 days). The employee shall not be paid for the first 240 hours (30 days) accrued.

    A commissioned fire fighter who was assigned to work an average of 56 hours per week and who has accrued a minimum of 360 hours (30 days) shall be paid for up to 1,080 hours (90 days). The fire fighter shall not be paid for the first 360 hours (30 days) accrued.
