The Great Chicago Fire started on October 9, 1871 killing approximately 300 people and leaving 100,000 homeless. It also destroyed more than 17,000 structures. The first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation was issued by President Woodrow Wilson in 1920 and President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week, which was October 4-10, 1925. National Fire Prevention Week is always the week in which October 9 falls.

A specific theme is chosen each year and is commemorated throughout the United States. This is also the time Lewisville Fire Department hosts its Annual Open House. We invite your family to join us during National Fire Safety week. We have also provided the following links to help keep your family safe throughout the year.
