| The City of Lewisville encourages every resident to recycle, and the cost for recycling services is included in the basic solid waste fee paid by residents on their water bills. Diverting materials from the landfill helps protect the life of the landfill, which enhances the ability of the city to contain future costs for solid waste collection services. How the Program Works
Each single-family household is provided a city-owned 64 gallon recycling cart with a serial number on it that “assigns” that cart to a specific address. Recycling is collected every other week. Residents are provided a city map with collection routes and a calendar for the year to assist with keeping track of their collection schedules. The city uses two alternate collection schedules for recycling (Schedule A and Schedule B), so residents should be careful to closely follow the instructions on the map for determining their collection schedules. The recycling map is also available online (VIEW RECYCLING MAP).
Recyclables will only be collected if placed inside the cart. All acceptable materials can be placed together in the cart; there is no need to separate the materials. Materials placed outside the cart will not be picked up. The cart is to be used ONLY for recyclable materials listed on the inside of the cart lid, and should not contain trash, yard waste, or any other material. If materials other than the items shown on the cart lid are placed in the cart, the cart will not be emptied by the recycling truck or the trash truck and the resident will be responsible for removing the unacceptable items from the cart. Not all items made out of plastic, glass, metal, or paper are accepted in the city’s curbside program, so be sure to consult the list to determine what is appropriate for this program.
Carts should be placed out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day in the same location that the trash is collected (either on the curb in front of the home or in the alley behind the home). To maintain neat and attractive residential areas and prevent possible theft or vandalism, carts should not be set out for collection more than 24 hours prior to the collection day, and should be removed from the collection location within 24 hours of being emptied. Requests for Additional Recycling Carts
The City makes second recycling carts available to residents who consistently have more recycling than will fit in one cart. There is a charge of $1.94 added to the monthly water bill to cover the maintenance and collection costs, so residents do need to complete a request form agreeing to pay that cost before a second cart will be delivered.

CITY FACILITY DROP OFF RECYCLING LOCATIONS:
City recycling drop-off sites are to be used only for the materials that are listed on the recycling dumpsters. This includes the recyclable materials accepted in the curbside recycling program only.
- No household hazardous waste materials may be left inside or outside the drop-off recycling containers.
- No Styrofoam, yard waste, construction materials, etc. are to placed in the recycling dumpsters.
- Keep lids and doors on containers closed to prevent littering.
- If the container is full, do not set materials outside the dumpster. Visit one of our other drop-off locations.
- Shredded paper must be in clear plastic bags. Do not put loose shredded paper in the recycling dumpster.

Cardboard and phone books may be placed in the solid green recycling dumpsters at City drop-off locations.

News About Electronics Recycling……..
Used computer equipment is a rapidly growing source of waste in Texas and across the country. While these computers contain valuable resources that can be reused or recycled, historically, rates for reusing and recycling used computer equipment have remained low. That is because there were few choices available to consumers to recycle those products.
Starting in September 2008, Texas consumers were provided new options to have their used computer equipment collected and recycled for free. HB 2714, requires computer manufacturers selling in the state to establish free and convenient programs to collect and recycle their own brand of desktops, laptops and monitors sold to consumers. It also requires retailers selling computer equipment to sell only the products of those manufacturers who develop such recycling programs and file their recovery plans with the State of Texas. Here are some of the highlights of the law:
Each manufacturer is responsible only for its own brand(s) of computer equipment. The rules define computer equipment as:
- a monitor,
- a desktop computer or laptop, and
- an accompanying keyboard and mouse made by the same manufacturer.
Manufacturers are required to offer collection and recycling only for computer equipment purchased primarily for personal or home-business use, regardless of when it was sold, not just computer equipment purchased after September 1, 2008.
Consumers are responsible for any confidential information left on the computer equipment.
Retailers are not permitted to sell any new computer equipment from a manufacturer unless the manufacturer appears on the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) list of manufacturers that have submitted a recovery plan and notification of a compliant collection program to the TCEQ. The list is updated regularly by TCEQ as new information is received from manufacturers. The list is available on the TCEQ web site:

Consumers should contact the retailer where the equipment was purchased or the manufacturer for their computer equipment for information about their recycling options.
Why do consumers need to recycle computers instead of placing them in the landfill?
Electronic equipment contains many toxic materials that are harmful to humans and the environment. Over 1,000 materials are used to make electronic products and their components like semiconductor chips, circuit boards, and disk drives. Computer monitors contain several pounds of lead, and if they go the landfill, that lead can potentially leach into water sources. Some states even ban them from their landfills. Many of the heavy metals found in landfills (such as lead, mercury and cadmium) come from electronic equipment discarded there.
Where can Lewisville residents recycle their computers?
TCEQ is finding that some manufacturers and retailers are slow to respond to the computer recycling regulations, but there are some options currently available in Lewisville. Residents are encouraged to contact local retailers who sell computer equipment and manufacturers on the TCEQ list to request recycling options be made available locally for their products.

Staples makes it easy for customers to recycle e–waste by simply bringing their used computers, monitors, laptops, and desktop printers, faxes and all–in–ones to any Staples store. STOP ILLEGAL DUMPING!
The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has received a grant to operate and maintain a hotline for reporting illegal dumping activities. If residents observe someone dumping household trash, roofing shingles or other debris, they are encouraged to call:
