Lewisville Police Department Complaint Procedure



The Lewisville Police Department will fairly and objectively investigate all allegations of police misconduct in order to insure the integrity of the Department.

If you have a complaint against a Lewisville Police Department employee, following these procedures will insure a prompt and efficient investigation.

The Lewisville Police Department classifies complaints as either “Class I” or “Class II” complaints. Class I complaints consist of serious misconduct allegations and include:

1. Civil Rights Violations
2. Excessive Force
3. Criminal Activity
4. Death or injury of any person in police custody
5. Discharge of firearm
6. Any other violation which could result in termination

If your complaint falls into this category, the Internal Affair Unit of the Lewisville Police Department will more than likely be responsible for the investigation. Section 614.022 of the Texas Government Code states for a complaint to be considered it must be:

1. In writing; and
2. Signed by the person making the complaint.

Any questions concerning Internal Affair complaints should be directed to Inv. Todd Cooper at (972) 219-3616.
Class II complaints consist of minor misconduct and include:

1. Discourtesy
2. Poor job performance
3. Driving complaints
4. Improper procedures which typically result in counseling or letter of reprimand.

Class II complaints should be directed to the on-duty patrol Watch Commander. You can contact this supervisor by calling 972-219-3600.

Note: Complaints filed directly with the Internal Affair’s Division which do not constitute Class I complaints, will be forwarded to the appropriate supervisor for investigation and follow-up.

Individuals, who intentionally file complaints which are known to be false, are subject to criminal penalties.

All complaints will be investigated thoroughly and completed as quickly as possible. The outcome of the respective investigations will be made known to the complainant in writing, telephone, or other form of electronic communication.
