Emergency Notification

The City of Lewisville has multiple tools we use to notify our residents of impending emergencies or disasters. We also use some of these tools to provide information regarding disaster recovery efforts.

    Outdoor Warning Siren System

The outdoor warning system in the City of Lewisville consists of 13 sirens strategically placed throughout the city. The sirens are sounded when there is a dangerous situation outside. When you hear the sirens, it simply means to seek shelter and seek information. We may use the sirens for severe weather or other emergencies such as hazardous materials spills. For indoor emergency notifications, you should have a NOAA All-Hazard Radio and sign-up for the City’s CodeRED Emergency Notification System.

    CodeRED Emergency Notification System

The City of Lewisville has instituted the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows us to telephone all or targeted areas of the City in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action (such as a boil-water notice, missing child or evacuation notices). The system is capable of dialing 60,000 phone numbers per hour. It then delivers a pre-recorded message describing the situations to a live person or an answering machine in the affected area possibly including instructions requiring action on the part of the recipient. Once the situation is remedied, another call will be placed to the area signaling that the issue has been addressed and that normal activities can be resumed.

    NOAA All-Hazard Radios

NOAA All-Hazard Radios are used nationwide. They are activated automatically by the National Weather Service when various weather emergencies are threatening an area. Lewisville’s Emergency Management Division recommends that you purchase a radio with S.A.M.E. technology so you can program it to the counties you want  information about severe weather.

    Local County Codes:

      · Collin County: 048085

      · Dallas County: 048113

      · Denton County: 048121

      · Parker County: 048367

      · Tarrant County: 048439

      · Wise County: 048497

We also recommend obtaining a radio with the “programmable alert” function. This allows you to program your radio for only the alerts you deem critical, such as a tornado warning.

In addition to the severe weather notifications, the Emergency Management Division has the ability to send out other alerts through the radio. Emergencies such as hazardous materials spills can be sent out through the radio with important response information.

    Cable-Override

The City’s Emergency Management Division has the ability to take control of the various cable providers broadcast to provide emergency information to residents.  This function may be used during citywide emergencies that require immediate information be broadcast out to residents. We no longer use this as a standard feature during severe weather to avoid blocking critical weather updates by the local media.
