Fire Department schedules annual Open House
The Lewisville Fire Department will hold its annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Central Fire Station, 188 N. Valley Parkway. Activities will include demonstrations and displays, children’s activities, hot dogs and drinks, and special appearances by Ashes and other Fire Safety Clowns. Teen Writers Group schedules Sept. 24 session
The Lewisville Public Library will hold a Teen Writers Group meeting on Monday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the Baird Room of the library, 1197 W. Main Street. The group is open to all teen-aged aspiring poets, novelists and short-story writers. Participants are invited to bring their own work to share, as time allows.
This month, Suburban Parent editor Candace Jones will discuss writing techniques and styles.

City to hold corporate golf challenge on Oct. 10
Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services will hold a Corporate Golf Challenge on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Lake Park Golf Course. The four-man scramble event, which is open to any company operating in Denton County, will tee off at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $240 per team, due by Oct. 1, and includes course play, cart, range balls and lunch. The tournament will be flighted, with prizes awarded in each flight. Participants must be at least 18 years old and continue employment with sponsoring company through the tournament date, or by at least 60 years old and receiving retirement benefits from the sponsoring company. “Sounds of Lewisville” Fall concert series continues in Old Town
Three top regional acts remain on the schedule for the “Sounds of Lewisville” Fall Concert Series, presented for the 18th consecutive year by the City of Lewisville. The free concerts will be held Tuesday nights through Oct. 9 in Old Town Lewisville in Wayne Ferguson Plaza starting at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Old Town restaurants will also be running specials during the series.
The remaining slate of Fall Concert Series performers includes: Briefcase Blues (Sept. 25), Brave Combo (Oct. 2) and the Tyler Dow Bryant Band (Oct. 9).
The series is coordinated by the City of Lewisville Community Relations and Tourism Department with assistance from the Parks and Leisure Services Department.

Visual Art League schedules presentation by artist Chris McHenry
Dallas artist Chris McHenry will be guest speaker for the Visual Art League on Tuesday, Oct. 2, starting at 7 p.m. VAL Gallery, 701 S. Stemmons Freeway.
McHenry is a landscape and cityscape artist who studied architecture at Louisiana Tech University and fine arts at the University of New Orleans. He had various positions as a pictorial artist, mural painter and scenic back drop painter/designer before becoming a full-time landscape painter. He recently was featured in the American Artist and International Artist magazines.
He plans to give a slide presentation of his paintings that will include a series of progress photographs of one of his White Rock paintings. He also will do a painting demonstration showing his plein air painting set-up techniques.
The gallery is located in the Lewisville West Shopping Center, on the west side of Interstate 35E between Main Street and Fox Avenue. Gallery hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Visual Arts League (VAL) is one of six local groups receiving funding from the Greater Lewisville Arts Council through the City of Lewisville grant program designed to foster cultural and fine arts in the community.

Denton County Master Gardeners plan InfoFest event
The Denton County Master Gardeners Association (DCMGA) will hold Garden InfoFest on Saturday, Oct. 6, offering free seminars, demonstrations, children’s activities and garden tours. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Upper Trinity Regional Water District, 900 N. Kealy Avenue in Lewisville.
DCMGA, the Native Plant Society of Texas and the African Violet Society will offer plants for sale during the event. Children’s activities will be held in conjunction with the Junior Master Gardener program and 4H volunteers. Also, Boy Scouts will have the opportunity to earn merit badges in Forestry and Naturalist.
Denton County Master Gardener Association is a volunteer program of Texas Cooperative Extension. Its mission is to educate Denton County residents about safe, effective, and sustainable horticultural practices that promote the development of healthy gardens, landscapes and communities.
