“Sounds of Lewisville” free fall concerts continue
Three top regional acts remain in the “Sounds of Lewisville” Fall Concert Series, presented by the City of Lewisville in Old Town Lewisville
The free concerts are being held on Tuesday nights through Oct. 7, starting at 7 p.m. in Wayne Ferguson Plaza across from Lewisville City Hall. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Leashed pets also are welcome.
The final concert will be the city’s National Night Out event, starting at 7 p.m. and featuring displays from Lewisville fire and police. The full concert series is coordinated by the City of Lewisville Community Relations & Tourism Department with assistance from the Parks and Leisure Services Department. Remaining performances are:

DCTA to hold public meeting for commuter rail plans
The Denton County Transportation Authority will update Lewisville and surrounding residents on its commuter rail plans and station designs during a open house on Monday, Sept. 22, 6:30-8 p.m. in the Glenmore Savage Community Room at the Municipal Annex, 197 W. Main Street. The meeting is open to the public and will feature renderings of the rail line stations and other displays. DCTA staff will be on hand to answer individual questions, but there will be no formal presentation. Persons with hearing or sight interpretive service needs are asked to contact DCTA at least two business days in advance at 972.221.4600 or info@dcta.net. Visual Art League offers free workshop by artist David Mask
The Visual Art League of Lewisville will present a free workshop, “How to Make Art Trading Cards,” by artist David Mask on Saturday, Sept. 20, starting at noon at the VAL Gallery, 701 S. Stemmons Freeway. The gallery is located in the Lewisville West Shopping Center, on the west side of Interstate 35E between Main Street and Fox Avenue. Gallery hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Mask is a science teacher with Lewisville ISD and is a certified Texas art teacher who has previously taught art at the high school level. Except for sketchbook pages, he works mostly in acrylic, pen, pencils and mixed media. Art Trading Cards are small works of art measuring 2½ inches by 3½ inches – the size of a regular sports trading card. – usually made of card stock with art on one side and artist information on the back.
Visual Arts League (VAL) is one of six local groups receiving funding from the Greater Lewisville Arts Council through the City of Lewisville grant program designed to foster cultural and fine arts in the community.

Denton County flu shot clinic set for Oct. 3 in Lewisville
The Denton County Health Department will offer low-cost flu immunizations on Friday, Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its Lewisville clinic, 190 N. Valley Parkway. Cost is $20 per person (cash only), with Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP also accepted. The county will hold a similar clinic on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex, 1500 Long Road in Denton.
Flu shots will be available for the general public, but the Health Department especially encourages those at high risk of complications from the flu to receive a vaccination. This includes children between 6 and 60 months old, adults over age 50, pregnant women, residents of nursing homes or long-term care facilities, anyone with certain chronic medical conditions, or anyone living with someone considered high risk.

LLELA Minor-Porter Log House opens window into Denton County history
Visitors to Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) can catch a glimpse at Denton County’s history during monthly tours and demonstrations at the Minor-Porter Log House. The next tour is scheduled for Sept. 20.
The cabin, which dates to about 1869, has been completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life. Log House Open House is held the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the cabin and associated structures and to answer questions in an informal self-paced tour. There is no additional fee beyond the $3 LLELA entry fee.
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area is 2,000-acre wilderness of prairies, forests and wetlands managed as a wildlife preserve by a group of agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the University of North Texas, the City of Lewisville, Lewisville ISD and Texas A & M University. Its mission is to preserve and restore native ecosystems and to provide and promote environmental education and scientific research.
LLELA is open to the public every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for fishing, hiking, camping, bird watching, kayaking/canoeing, picnicking and other outdoor activities. For information, visit www.ias.unt.edu/llela or call 972.219.3930.
