Free astronomy program planned for May 10
Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services will hold a free Stargazers astronomy program from 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Memorial Park, 1950 S. Valley Parkway. The program will be conducted by astronomer John Olson using electronically controlled 10-inch and 12-inch telescopes to view such celestial features as open and globular star clusters, distant galaxies, planets, moons and nebulae. Adult softball registration starts May 12
Registration for the city’s adult softball summer leagues will be held May 12-16 at the Parks and Leisure Services office of the Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. Available leagues include men’s commercial, men’s church, men’s open and coed. League play will begin the week of June 2. Registration is by team, but individuals can be placed on a list provided to teams in need of additional players. LLELA to hold Spring Bird Walk on Saturday
Birders of all types are invited to welcome their feathered friends to Lewisville for spring and summer stays during a series of monthly Spring Bird Walks to be held Saturday, May 10, at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA).
Hundreds of bird species make LLELA their permanent or migratory home. Master birder Keith Lockhart will guide visitors to some of the best viewing spots, many of them not normally available to the public. The walk starts at 7:30 a.m.
Birders of all skill levels are welcome, ages 10 and up. There is a $2 program fee for the bird walk, in addition to the regular $3 per person gate fee to enter the preserve. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 972.219.7980.
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area is 2,000-acre wilderness of prairies, forests and wetlands managed as a wildlife preserve by a group of agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the University of North Texas, the City of Lewisville, Lewisville ISD and Texas A & M University. Its mission is to preserve and restore native ecosystems and to provide and promote environmental education and scientific research.

KLB schedules free “Garden Secrets” class on May 15
Keep Lewisville Beautiful will hold a free gardening class, “Native and Adaptive Plants,” on Thursday, May 15, 7-8 p.m. at Memorial Park Recreation Center, 1950B S.Valley Parkway. Key speaker for the class is Jane Bartosiewicz, a Dallas County Master Gardener, Texas Master Naturalist and Master Composter. Reservations are recommended. Visual Art League schedules exhibit by artist J. Packard Wright
The Visual Art League of Lewisville will present “Painterly Realism,” an exhibition by artist J. Packard Wright, from May 17 through June 28 at the VAL Gallery, 701 S. Stemmons Freeway. Concurrent with the exhibition will be a judged sow for VAL members, called “Zoom … There and Back.” The opening reception for both shows will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday, May 17.
Wright was the 2007 Fresh Ideas winner. She is a graduate of the University of New Mexico. Murray State College in Oklahoma has purchased three of her works for its permanent collection and has invited her to demonstrate at the school’s annual art fair for four years. Wright also taught at the renowned Goddard Art School Center in Ardmore, Okla.
The gallery is located in the Lewisville West Shopping Center, on the west side of Interstate 35E between Main Street and Fox Avenue. Gallery hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Visual Arts League (VAL) is one of six local groups receiving funding from the Greater Lewisville Arts Council through the City of Lewisville grant program designed to foster cultural and fine arts in the community.

LLELA Minor-Porter Log House opens window into Denton County history
Visitors to Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) can catch a glimpse at Denton County’s history during monthly tours and demonstrations at the Minor-Porter Log House. The next tour is scheduled for May 17.
The cabin, which dates to about 1869, has been completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life. Log House Open House is held the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the cabin and associated structures and to answer questions in an informal self-paced tour. There is no additional fee beyond the $3 LLELA entry fee.
