Local bands being sought for 19th annual Summer Music Series


Dates have been set for the 19th “Sounds of Lewisville” Summer Concert Series, and this year’s series will feature four nights focused on local up-and-coming bands. The free concerts will be held on Tuesday nights, from June 3 through July 22, starting at 7:30 p.m. each night at the Vista Ridge Amphitheater, 3049 Lake Vista Drive.

The schedule includes four nights dedicated to local bands, with one or two bands performing at each concert depending upon the schedule. Established regional acts will perform on the other four concert nights. A selection committee will review submissions from local bands starting the week of Jan. 14 and will announce the performance schedule by the end of February.

Vista Ridge Amphitheater is a city-owned outdoor performance facility with seating for about 850 people that is used for public events and is available for private rentals by calling 972.219.3550.

“Sounds of Lewisville” also offers a Fall Concert Series with four more free performances held on Tuesday evenings from Sept. 16 through Oct. 7 in Old Town Lewisville. Both series are coordinated by the City of Lewisville Community Relations & Tourism Department with assistance from the Parks and Leisure Services Department.

Corporate Drive construction to begin next week, last through February

Construction crews will begin Wednesday, Jan. 16, to repair concrete street panels on Corporate Drive between State Highway 121 Business and Interstate 35E. During construction, parts of the road will be narrowed to one lane in each direction. The project is expected to last until Feb. 25. Free astronomy program planned for Jan. 12

Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services will hold a free Stargazers astronomy program from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Memorial Park, 1950 S. Valley Parkway. The program will be conducted by astronomer John Olson using electronically controlled 10-inch and 12-inch telescopes to view such celestial features as open and globular star clusters, distant galaxies, planets, moons and nebulae. Teen Writers Group schedules Jan. 28 session

The Lewisville Public Library will hold a Teen Writers Group meeting on Monday, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Teen Point on the second floor of the library, 1197 W. Main Street. The group is open to all teen-aged aspiring poets, novelists and short-story writers. Participants are invited to bring their own work to share, as time allows.

This month, author Sarah C. Jordan will discuss writing techniques and styles. Jordan’s published works include The BossQueen, Little BigBark and The Sentinel Pup.

Collegiate Bass highlights to air on Fox College Sports

The 2007 National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship, held last September on Lewisville Lake, featured 83 teams from 48 schools and was captured by Justin Rackley and Trevor Knight of Texas A&M. Highlights from the tournament now can be viewed on Fox College Sports and FSN Southwest, with a special nationwide airing scheduled for later this month on Fox Sports Network.

Episodes of the NCBFC series will air through early July on Fox College Sports each Wednesday at 7 p.m., with a repeat each Sunday at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The programs will air on FSN Southwest each Thursday at 2:30 p.m. A one-hour special of the championship will be featured nationwide on the Fox Sports Network on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. and will repeat on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m.

The 2008 collegiate championship has been scheduled for Oct. 16-18 back at Lewisville Lake.

Musical Feast to present “Freedom Song” choral concert

Musical Feast Choral Society will present “Freedom Song” on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m. at Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, 602 N. Old Orchard Lane. Tickets are $5 per person. The show will feature choral anthems, solos and guest musicians honoring Dr. Martin Luther King and American freedom.

Musical Feast Choral Society is one of six local groups receiving funding from the Greater Lewisville Arts Council through a City of Lewisville grant program designed to foster cultural and fine arts in the community. For more information, please visit www.musicalfeast.org.
