Texas Baby Boomers & More Expo set for Sept. 13
The 2008 North Texas Baby Boomers & More Expo will be held at the Frederick P. Herring Recreation Center (formerly Civic Circle Recreation Center), 191 Civic Circle, on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, organized by the Lewisville Senior Activity Center, will include local business vendors, yoga classes, cooking demonstrations, cash grab machine, wine tasting, prize drawings and information booths in the areas of travel, fitness, finance, anti-aging products, home builders and sports. The event is free, but the wine –tasting costs $10 per person. The expo is geared toward anyone born in 1964 and earlier. For information, call 972.219.5050.

DCTA schedules public meetings for commuter rail plans
The Denton County Transportation Authority will update Lewisville and surrounding residents on its commuter rail plans and station designs during two open house events in September, including one in Lewisville on Sept. 22. Both meetings are open to the public and will feature renderings of the rail line stations and other displays. DCTA staff will be on hand to answer individual questions, but there will be no formal presentation. Open houses will be:

Runners to converge on Old Town for two September events
Two five-kilometer runs will be held in Old Town Lewisville during September to raise money for charity.
The annual Race for the Children will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, featuring a 5-kilometer competitive run and a one-mile fun run. Prizes will be awarded in a range of divisions, including overall winners of the timed event. The run is being conducted by Lewisville Masonic Lodge #201 to raise money for Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. Entry fee is $18 in advance or $20 on site. The inaugural Old Town Business Association 5K Fun Run will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, before the Western Day festival. It is being staged by the OTBA to raise money for American Cancer Society in memory of longtime Lewisville resident Wayne Ferguson. The run will start at 7 a.m. and follow a path through Old Town. Entry fee is $25 prior to Sept. 1, or $35 thereafter. On-site registration will start at 6 a.m. in Wayne Ferguson Plaza, on the north side of Main Street at Poydras. Canine swimmers invited to special event at Sun Valley pool
Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services will hold Doggie Dive-In at Sun Valley Aquatic Park on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. A full morning full of fun canine activities is planned, including contests and prizes. Proof of current vaccinations must be presented upon check-in on the day of the event. Cost is $4 per dog and space is limited to 400 dogs.

Volunteers needed for Western Day festival
Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles assisting with the annual Western Day festival, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27, in Old Town Lewisville. Helps is needed in such areas as parade monitors, parking attendants, Vendor relations, general setup, stage management and more. Lewisville Lake Symphony program features return of Shannon Lee
Violinist Shannon Lee will make a featured appearance with the Lewisville on Friday, Sept. 19, at Lakeland Baptist Church, 397 South Stemmons Freeway in Lewisville. Lee first appeared with the Lewisville symphony in 2006, a performance that drew the largest audience in the group’s 25-year history.
The Canadian-born Lee has received positive worldwide reviews for her first commercial recording, “Introducing Shannon Lee,” released recently by Telarc International. During the Sept. 19 concert, she will play Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Since her 2006 appearance in Lewisville, Lee she has toured with the Dallas Symphony and made her European debut with the Nuremburg Symphony in Germany. This summer she performed in the Colorado Music Festival and with the Nashville Symphony.

Now in its 25th season, the Lewisville Lake Symphony is one of Texas’ most respected, all-professional regional orchestras. Teen Court to hold volunteer training
The Lewisville-Flower Mound Teen Court will hold a volunteer training session for teens and adults on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. Students ages 13 to 17, or still in high school, are eligible to volunteer as attorneys, bailiffs, judges or jurors. Adult volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities. The training will be from 9:30 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m., and lunch will be provided. Teen Court is an alternative, voluntary program that offers young offenders an opportunity to make restitution for an offense through community service, specialized classes and jury service, thus avoiding fines and keeping the juvenile’s record clear. By bringing the teens before a jury of their peers, the program seeks to prevent unlawful behavior while providing direct experience in the judiciary system.

Residential recycling calendars available
Residential recycling in Lewisville is collected every other week. Calendars were mailed to all households in December. Residents who did not receive a calendar can call the Environmental Programs Office at 972.219.3503 to request one. The collection schedule also is available on-line at www.cityoflewisville.com.
