Mayor's Corner

With school getting out a little later than usual this year, the start of summer might have sneaked up on you like it did me. But there’s no question that summer is here, and that means more opportunities for families to get out and spend some fun times together.
Lewisville Lake Park is a popular destination for picnics, fishing, swimming (in marked areas) and other outdoor activities. Special features at or near the park include Lake Park Golf Course, batting cages, an award-winning disc golf course, the fishing barge and a playground with full restroom facilities. There also is a campground at the park.
As always, please be safe when swimming or boating. Any body of water can be dangerous if you are not paying attention to yourself and the people around you.
If you want to camp in a more rustic setting, or just enjoy nature in all its majesty, stop by Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area. This 2,000-acre site below the dam is a National Wildlife Preserve with a bison herd, birding trails, hiking paths, campsites, historic cabin, trout fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
Sun Valley Aquatic Park opened the summer season on Memorial Day weekend, and both city aquatic parks will be open throughout the summer for low-cost, kid-friendly entertainment. Family season passes offer an outstanding bargain.
The Old Town Farmers Market is in full swing every Saturday at Wayne Ferguson Plaza. It is open from 8 a.m. to sellout, but for the really great tomatoes I love, get there early.
On July 4, don’t miss our annual fireworks show over south Lewisville. And on Tuesday nights in June and July, enjoy the Sounds of Lewisville Summer Concert Series. These free shows have been moved to Old Town this year, starting at 7 p.m. each Tuesday.
For more information on these and other summertime activities in Lewisville, visit the city’s website at www.cityoflewisville.com.
Have fun and safe summer.
