For the week of:
May 18, 2008

Lewisville PD License Plate Scanning System Recovers First Stolen Vehicle
On Tuesday May 6th, at about 6:46 p.m., Officer Showalter was conducting a Close Patrol of St. Charles Place Apartments, 1090 South Charles Street. While driving past building number 3, Officer Showalter received an alert of a possible stolen vehicle from the onboard license plate recognition system.

Officer Showalter located the silver Honda Civic in question parked across from building number 3. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the steering column was observed to be damaged. The Honda was confirmed stolen out of Carrollton (08-05345).

The onboard license plate recognition system, PlateScan, is a new addition to two police squad cars. The system works by capturing digital license plate images as they pass one of four cameras mounted on the squad car. The plates are automatically cross-checked in real time against multiple local and statewide databases to identify stolen vehicles. Vehicle matches alert the officer to take appropriate action.

Pet Owners Reminded to Keep Vaccinations Current
Warm summer months often lead to increased interaction between domestic pets and wild animals, which also increases the risk that household pets might become infected with such diseases as rabies. While there have been no reports of pet or human rabies infection in Lewisville, the city’s Animal Services Division reminds all pet owners of the importance of keeping their animals’ rabies vaccination current. In addition to protecting the pets and their human families from the disease, rabies vaccinations are required by state law and city code for dogs, cats and ferrets. For information, contact the Animals Services Division at 972.219.3478 or visit a local veterinarian.
