Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting
The Planning and Zoning Commission met on May 6th with a full agenda. There was one Preliminary Plat with variances for consideration, and four zone change requests. The Preliminary Plat of UNICLA Addition, a 9.05 acre tract zoned Light Industrial (LI), located on the north side of FM 407 and on the east side of Archer Road with a requested variance to exclude Lot 1, Block B, from the proportionate cost share of Moccassin Trail extension was recommended for approval unanimously (7-0). The following four zone change requests were also recommended for approval:
–Consideration of a zone change request from Old Town Mixed Use Two (OTMU-2) and Office District (OD) to Public Use (PU) on a 2.25 acre tract located at 201 W. Main Street. The request is being made by the City of Lewisville, the current property owner.
–Consideration of a zone change request from General Business (GB) to Old Town Center (OTC) on a 0.15 acre tract located at 136 and 138 W. Main Street. The request is being made by Thirteen Fevers LLC., the current property owner.
–Consideration of a zone change request from Light Industrial (LI) to Old Town Mixed Use Two (OTMU-2) on a 0.31 acre tract located at 115 Leonard Street. The request is being made by Garvey Homes, the current property owner.
Each of the three Old Town zoning requests were recommended for approval on a 7-0 vote. The following request was recommended for approval with a 6-1 vote. Commission member Karen Boenker cast the lone vote against the recommendation for approval.
- Consideration of a zone change request from Light Industrial (LI) to Mixed Use Ninety (MU-90) on a 90.08 acre tract located north of State Highway 121, west of the railroad tracks, south of Lakeside Circle, and east of Timbercreek. The request is being made by Riverside DPH, LP., the current property owner.
Alley Repairs Between Solway Drive and Canterbury Lane
The City of Lewisville Street Division will be making alley repairs between Solway Drive and Canterbury Lane. The alley will be closed to through traffic. Homeowners can enter from Solway Drive or Windmere Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, and be completed Tuesday, May 20, 2008 weather permitting. This will require that trash be placed in front of the residences until the work has been completed.
“Sounds of Lewisville” Schedules Free Summer Concerts
Eight top regional acts have been scheduled for the “Sounds of Lewisville” Summer Concert Series, presented for the 19th consecutive year by the City of Lewisville. The free concerts will be held on Tuesday nights, from June 3 through July 22, starting at 7:00 p.m. This year’s series is moving to Old Town Lewisville, adjacent to Lewisville City Hall. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Alcohol is prohibited at the concert series.
“Sounds of Lewisville” also offers a Fall Concert Series with four more free performances held on Tuesday evenings in Old Town Lewisville. A performance schedule is being developed. Both series are coordinated by the City of Lewisville Community Relations & Tourism Department with assistance from the Parks and Leisure Services Department.
Series organizers also announced that Tyler Dow Bryant was voted the winner of the People’s Choice Award for the 2007 series. His band will open the summer concert series this year on June 3.

Free Astronomy Program Planned for May 10
Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services will hold a free Stargazers astronomy program from 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Memorial Park, 1950 S. Valley Parkway. The program will be conducted by astronomer John Olson using electronically controlled 10-inch and 12-inch telescopes to view such celestial features as open and globular star clusters, distant galaxies, planets, moons and nebulae. Adult Softball Registration Starts May 12
Registration for the city’s adult softball summer leagues will be held May 12-16 at the Parks and Leisure Services office of the Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. Available leagues include men’s commercial, men’s church, men’s open and coed. League play will begin the week of June 2. Registration is by team, but individuals can be placed on a list provided to teams in need of additional players. KLB Schedules Free “Garden Secrets” Class on May 15
Keep Lewisville Beautiful will hold a free gardening class, “Native and Adaptive Plants,” on Thursday, May 15, 7-8 p.m. at Memorial Park Recreation Center, 1950B S. Valley Parkway. Key speaker for the class is Jane Bartosiewicz, a Dallas County Master Gardener, Texas Master Naturalist and Master Composter. Reservations are recommended. LLELA to Hold Spring Bird Walk on Saturday
Birders of all types are invited to welcome their feathered friends to Lewisville for spring and summer stays during a series of monthly Spring Bird Walks to be held Saturday, May 10, at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA). Hundreds of bird species make LLELA their permanent or migratory home. Master birder Keith Lockhart will guide visitors to some of the best viewing spots, many of them not normally available to the public. The walk starts at 7:30 a.m.
Birders of all skill levels are welcome, ages 10 and up. There is a $2 program fee for the bird walk, in addition to the regular $3 per person gate fee to enter the preserve. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 972.219.7980.
LLELA Minor-Porter Log House Opens Window into Denton County History
Visitors to Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) can catch a glimpse at Denton County’s history during monthly tours and demonstrations at the Minor-Porter Log House. The next tour is scheduled for May 17. The cabin, which dates to about 1869, has been completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life. Log House Open House is held the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the cabin and associated structures and to answer questions in an informal self-paced tour. There is no additional fee beyond the $3 LLELA entry fee.
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area is 2,000-acre wilderness of prairies, forests and wetlands managed as a wildlife preserve by a group of agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the University of North Texas, the City of Lewisville, Lewisville ISD and Texas A & M University. Its mission is to preserve and restore native ecosystems and to provide and promote environmental education and scientific research. LLELA is open to the public every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for fishing, hiking, camping, bird watching, kayaking/canoeing, picnicking and other outdoor activities.
