Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area announces May events
 
There’s no better place to hike, go fishing, paddle a kayak, watch the birds, visit the log house, or just find a quiet place to relax than the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area.
                                                                                                                                  

      • Bird Walk: May 12, 7:30 a.m. Bird watchers of all skill levels are invited to join expert birder Keith Lockhart as he leads the way to birding locations at LLELA. Ages 10 and up. There is a $2 program fee for the bird walk, in addition to the regular gate fee of $5/person. Reservations are requested but not required; call 972.219.3930.
       
      • Nature Walk: May 12, 10 a.m. The hike will last about two hours. There is a $2 program fee, in addition to the regular gate fee ($5/person). Reservations are requested, but not required, at 972.219.3930.
       
      • Open House at the Minor-Porter Log House:  May 19, 12-3 p.m.Completely restored and furnished with all the trappings of everyday frontier life, the log house gives visitors to LLELA a window on life in Denton County in 1870. Interested visitors of all ages are welcome to arrive at any time during the open hours and tour at their own pace. Knowledgeable volunteers will guide visitors through the structures and answer questions in this informal tour. Cost: regular admission ($5/person; children age 5 years and under free).
       
      • Kids’ Fishing Day: May 19, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Angling instructors at LLELA are offering a whole morning of fun activities that will introduce children to the art of fishing. Activities will include: casting, fish identification, knot-tying, aquatic habitats, fishing rules and ethics and more. There is a $2 program fee, in addition to the regular gate fee ($5/person). Children must be accompanied by an adult.       • Paddle the Elm Fork: May 19. Each month Kayak Power provides equipment and instruction followed by a six-mile trip down the Elm Fork to a shuttle vehicle. Paddlers of all skill levels are welcome. Contact Kayak Power at214.669.1663 for schedule and fee information.
       
      • Summer Camp registration is open through June 1. Where else but LLELA can children have an opportunity to catch a tadpole, paddle a kayak, mosey down the trail, spend some time in 1869, and more? In June, LLELA is offering two weeks of day camps for children 7-12 years old. Sign up for a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule ($120 per child) or a full week of classes for $185 per child. Contact 972.219.3930 or lisacole@unt.edu or visitias.unt.edu/llela for details and registration.
       
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area is 2,000 acres of prairies, forests, and wetlands managed as a wildlife preserve by a group of agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the University of North Texas, the City of Lewisville, Lewisville ISD and Texas A & M University.
