LABORATORY SERVICES

The Environmental Control Services Division supports the performance of the Water and Wastewater Divisions. They protect and preserve the environment by performing laboratory and process analyses.
The ECS Laboratory is a certified water and wastewater laboratory serving the environmental needs of the City of Lewisville and its citizens. The combined laboratories perform over 70,000 analyses annually in order to insure a safe drinking water supply and a clean environment for our customers. |
 | In addition to testing water samples for citizens, the Environmental Control Services Laboratory is responsible for conducting conventional analyses on samples taken from both the Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Plants that are necessary to meet State and Federal regulations. ECS Laboratory also performs approximately 600 process control tests each week for the Wastewater Treatment Plant, ensuring that each step of the treatment process is working effectively. |

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
| 1. | How much fluoride is in Lewisville's Drinking Water?
Lewisville's Drinking Water contains between 0.8 mg/l and 1.0 mg/l fluoride. Lewisville's source water (Lewisville Lake) contains naturally occurring fluoride of 0.2 mg/l and during the treatment process, fluoride is added to achieve the optimum level recommended aiding in the prevention of tooth decay. |
| 2. | Does Lewisville have hard or soft water? How many grains per gallon of hardness does the water contain?
Lewisville's Water is classified as moderately hard water; the average hardness is 150 mg/l, which is approximately 8 grains per gallon. |
| 3. | What tests are performed on Lewisville's Drinking Water?
Lewisville's Drinking Water is tested annually for over 120 constituents including a complete chemical analysis, trace metals analysis, and organic compounds testing. The City's Water Laboratory performs over 20,000 process control analysis each year, in addition, to collecting and analyzing 90 bacteriological samples each month. Water Treatment Plant personnel also perform thousands of operational analyses each year. |
| 4. | Why does my water have an unpleasant taste and/or odor at times?
Taste and odor in surface water supply most often occur as the result of organic compounds released when the Lake "turns over" or stratifies. This stratification takes place once of twice each year usually in late spring and again in the fall of the year. Lewisville's Water Treatment Plant treats the water to remove taste and odor problems, but it can take from one to several weeks to eliminate these problems from the entire water distribution system. It should be stressed that while taste and odor problems certainly make the water unpalatable it is still perfectly safe to drink. |
| 5. | Can I have my tap or well water tested for bacteria?
Citizens can have their tap or well water tested for bacteria by the City of Lewisville Laboratory for a cost of $26.00 for each sample examined. You must first come by the ECS Laboratory located at 897 Treatment Plant Road and pick-up a sample bottle, instructions on collecting a sample and the required paperwork.
