CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE
For the week of:
January 27, 2008
City Trail Construction
A pre-construction meeting was held on January 16, 2008, for Lewisville residents in the Timber Creek Trail area. About 15 residents attended as well as the project architect with Halff & Associates, the project contractor with North Start Construction, Park Board members, and City staff.
This trail, its concept beginning in 2001, will connect Central Park to Memorial Park with TxDOT contributing with an 80% reimbursable grant. Construction is scheduled to begin on February 4, 2008. Concerns addressed at this meeting included topics regarding trees, safety, accessibility, aesthetics, as well as interfacing into the neighborhoods. Other concerns dealt with proximity of trail to homes, security, lighting, parking, signage, traffic, sewer pipes, and thickness of the pavement.
Hours of construction will generally take place Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., weather dependant. Any Saturday construction will be pre-approved by the City. Once the trail is completed, an official announcement will be publicized and a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place to open the new section of the trail.
Irrigation Troubleshooting Workshop
On Tuesday, February 5, 2008 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Ewing Irrigation will present an Irrigation Troubleshooting Workshop for the public as well as City employees in the DFW area. This class is free and will be held at the Memorial Park Recreation Center, 1950B S. Valley Parkway. The main topic of discussion will be learning a systematic approach to irrigation troubleshooting that will save hours of frustration and enable repairs to be pinpointed quickly. Possible problems noted will deal with electrical components, valves, pipe sizing, and design.
City Council to Consider Residency Restrictions for Registered Sex Offenders
The Lewisville City Council on Monday, January 28 will consider a proposed ordinance that would restrict where within the city registered sex offenders could live. The draft regulation would prohibit registered offenders from living within a fixed distance of schools, daycares, playgrounds and other public places where children routinely gather.
City staff prepared a draft ordinance at the request of City Council, but left the minimum distance blank. Documentation has been prepared for several possible distances, ranging upward from the 1,000-foot distance the state imposes on those offenders currently on probation or parole. That state requirement goes away when the probation or parole period ends; the city restriction would take effect at that time if adopted. At least 36 Metroplex cities have local restrictions, ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 feet.
Lewisville Municipal Court to Participate in Statewide Warrant Roundup
The Lewisville Municipal Court will be among dozens of agencies across Texas participating in a statewide warrant roundup on Saturday, Feb. 16. The court will mail notices on Feb. 1 to all people with outstanding arrest warrants, and police officers will visit known addresses of those people on Feb. 16 to make arrests.
No amnesty is being offered, but anyone with an outstanding arrest warrant is encouraged to contact the Lewisville Municipal Court before Feb. 16 to settled their obligations and avoid being arrested.
Great State Wide Warrant Roundup is an effort by courts across Texas to actively enforce warrants for individuals who either have not appeared in court as required or who have failed to satisfy a court judgment. Lewisville is participating for the second time.
Hearts & Roses Ball
PALS is sponsoring the annual Valentine's dance with some enhancements this year. The Hearts & Roses Ball will be held on Friday, February 1st beginning at 7:30 pm. This dance is a combination of the Daddy/Daughter and Mother/Son dances of the past and will be held for the first time at the Hilton Garden Ballroom. The Hilton will be providing a wait staff adding a touch of class to the dining experience as well as staffing a coat check room. This is a special program that each year receives many compliments and we expect many more with the Hilton's additional touch of class.
