The City of Lewisville operates a permanent household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center that provides residents with a convenient, safe and environmentally sound way to get rid of waste materials that should not be put into the landfill. The Residential Convenience Center (RCC) was built in Spring 2007 with solid waste grant funds from the North Central Texas Council of Governments and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The RCC is open on the Second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. until noon to accept materials from Lewisville residents. This provides residents with 12 opportunities a year to properly dispose of household chemicals and electronics they no longer need. No hazardous household products or electronics waste can be dropped off outside of the manned collection days and times.
The RCC also provides a drop-off location for recyclable materials. The containers can be used to recycle the same products collected curbside in Lewisville (View Recycling Information). Recycling containers are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and they are labeled so residents know what products to put in each container. The containers are to be used only for recycling – no trash, yard waste, bulky waste, appliances, hazardous household products, electronics waste, or other materials are accepted in these containers. The area is under 24 hour surveillance and violators will be prosecuted.
Hazardous waste is one of our nation's biggest environmental problems. Annually, over six billion tons of this waste is generated from households alone. Most of us think of hazardous waste as something that is produced as a result of industrial activity, but the truth is that a typical home can contain 100 to 200 products for cleaning, painting, lubricating, disinfecting, etc. that technically become hazardous wastes when we discard them. Products from a single home might seem insignificant, but when thousands of homes use similar products and dispose of them down the drain or in the landfill, the combined effect becomes a major problem.
Household hazardous wastes should never be improperly disposed of by pouring wastes down the drain, on the ground, into the storm sewer, or into the trash. These substances can contaminate surface waters, septic tanks, or the wastewater treatment system. Some substances have the potential to cause physical injury to workers in the treatment system or to sanitation workers who pick up the trash. As consumers, we are all in a position to help control the amount of hazardous waste that enters the environment. Each of us is environmentally responsible for the purchase, use, and disposal of the products we have in our possession. By shopping wisely, reading labels, and properly managing the hazardous wastes we generate, we can responsibly and successfully address the hazardous waste problem.
