WHO WE ARE

The Health Division conducts food related health inspections of all food service establishments, retail food establishments, temporary food service establishments, mobile food units, schools and child care facilities. These inspections are conducted on a routine basis to ensure compliance with the standards set forth by the Texas Department of Health. The Health Division also investigates all complaints about food service establishments located in Lewisville.



SERVICES WE PROVIDE


PERMITS

Health Permits
Health permits are required for all food establishments including restaurants, bars that serve food, grocery stores, convenience stores, businesses that sell retail food product, mobile food units, child care facilities and schools.

Temporary Food Establishment Permits
Food vendors may operate a Temporary Food Service Establishment for up to ten (10) consecutive days. The cost to operate a Temporary Food Service Establishment is $50.00 for the first day plus $10.00 each additional day.

Permit approval is contingent upon the nature of the Temporary Food Service event and the number of times Temporary Food Establishment permits have been issued for:
    1. the food vendor; and
    2. the location at which the vendor wishes to prepare and serve food

Complaints Concerning Food Service Establishments
To report a possible food-borne illness or unsanitary condition at a restaurant or other food service establishment, contact the Health Division between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at 972-219-3753. You may also report concerns by clicking here.


FOOD HANDLER CERTIFICATION

City of Lewisville Code of Ordinances, Chapter 7, Article VII, Section 7-237 states in part:

    (a) Every person whose work brings him into contact with the handling of food, utensils, or food service equipment must possess a food handler's permit.

    (b)  Every person who owns, manages, or otherwise controls any food service establishment shall not permit any person to be employed therein whose work brings him into contact with the handling of food, utensils or food service equipment who does not possess a valid food handler's permit within 45 days from the date of his employment. These permits shall be made available upon request by the city health division, therefore known as the regulatory health authority.

    (c) The owner/manager shall be responsible for the payment of the food handler's permits on a yearly basis.

Certified Food Manager Training

Each food establishment is required to have at least one person in charge for each shift that is responsible for supervising food preparation and has a valid Food Protection Management Training Certificate. The Certified Food Manager Class is offered at various locations throughout the state. A course registry of the Certified Food Manager Accredited Training Programs is available for review and downloading at the Texas Department of Health web site.



PLAN REVIEW

All new or remodeled food establishments are required to submit plans to be reviewed for compliance with health code regulations. As a part of this process, construction or structural design inspections are performed. All facilities must go through this process before a health permit to operate can be issued. In addition to the health permit, a certificate of occupancy may also be required.
