Court Appearances

The law requires that you appear in Court in your case. If you were issued a ticket or "citation", your appearance date is noted on your citation. By signing the citation, you promised to appear in court or to take some action by the date indicated. If you have been released on bond, your appearance date is set on the bond or you must contact the court for an appearance date. If you request a continuance, the court will schedule your new appearance date. You or your attorney must make an appearance in person at the court office, enter a plea, and obtain a court date if desired. (Juveniles have a separate set of rules for their appearance. Please refer to the Juveniles section.)

If you waive a jury trial and plead guilty or nolo contendere (no contest), you may talk to the judge about extenuating circumstances that you want the judge to consider when setting your fine, but the judge is not required to reduce your fine. Before pleading no contest or guilty, the court will schedule a jury trial unless you waive that right. If you do, the trial will be before the judge. If you plead guilty or no contest, you must include a waiver of jury trial. If you plead not guilty, the court will schedule a date for your trial and provide you with a copy of the new appearance date.
