PATROL OPERATIONS
Officers Receive Award at Competition

Lieutenant Mike Lane, Sergeant Ken Naffziger, and Officer Rick Crociata recently traveled to Liberty Hill, Texas (just outside of Austin) to compete in an NRA-sponsored, three gun competition. On Saturday May 5th, members of the U.S. Military; contract security operators; and local, state, and federal law enforcement officers converged in the Texas Hill Country to test their training and skills. Participants traveled from as far away as San Diego, California and Oregon for this competition. Seven complex stages of fire were constructed, requiring officers to utilize their patrol rifles, shotguns, and duty handguns for successful navigation. Once the final scores were tallied, “Team Lewisville” took home 3rd Place in “Tactical Division.”

Medication Disposal Event

On Saturday, April 28th, the City of Lewisville teamed up with LISD and the DEA to hold a medication disposal event. The goal of this operation is really two-fold: to reduce the risk of prescription drug abuse and increased awareness of this critical public health issue.

The event took place in the parking lot of Lewisville High School at 1098 West Main Street. Many other cities also participated in this event. This was a great opportunity for those who have missed previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

This event was a huge success. As a follow-up to last week’s report, I now have the actual weights of the medication that was recovered. The L.I.S.D. community took in a total of 2,491 pounds of expired and unused medications. That is an increase of 714 pounds over what was taken in this past October. The Lewisville location alone took in 886 pounds of medication. This will prevent the medication from being disposed of improperly and it will prevent the abuse of this recovered prescription medication. Thanks go out to all who participated in this event!

Lewisville Leads LEADRS

LEADRS (Law Enforcement Advanced DUI/DWI Reporting System) allows peace officers to enter arrest information on-line and print out case reports and associated District Attorney on approved, pre-filled forms.

LEADRS Texas is grant funded through TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation). It is fully web-based and there are no license fees to Police Agencies who use LEADRS.

TMPA, in association with TxDOT, started developing LEADRS in 2004 with the goal of reducing DUI/DWI arrest reporting time by 30%. Since then, LEADRS users have found that the program has actually reduced their reporting time by up to 50%.

This month, Lewisville was the second highest producer in the State. This was accomplished with one of our two full-time DWI Officers being out of service for the majority of the month.

COMMUNITY SERVICES
Stolen Pet Recovered

In March of 2012, a Lewisville resident had his English Bulldog stolen from this backyard in the 200 block of South Shore Place. The case was initially placed on an “inactive” status due to a lack of investigative leads. In May of 2012, the victim again called police and stated that his stolen bulldog may be at the Carrollton Animal Shelter. The case was then assigned to Hinson for follow-up investigation. Hinson made contact with the Carrollton Animal Shelter and discovered that the bulldog had been adopted out the previous day. Hinson made contact with the new family and confirmed that this bulldog does, in fact, belong to the Lewisville victim. Hinson traveled to Stephenville, Texas and recovered the stolen bulldog. It was returned to its owner.

Detective Recovers Stolen Motorcycle

In October of 2009, a motorcycle was stolen from the 200 block of Southwest Parkway. The case was initially suspended due to a lack of investigative leads. Last week, Lewisville Police were notified that this stolen motorcycle had been subsequently registered to an individual in Dallas. The tax office had somehow allowed this vehicle to be registered even though it was still reported as stolen. Detective Scott Kelly re-opened this theft case and began his investigation. Kelly was able to recover the motorcycle last week. It is still not clear who the suspect is, but Kelly continues to investigate this case.

Captain Receives Commendation

Captain Kevin Deaver recently traveled to Mesquite to assist with an assessment process to help the Mesquite Police Department select a new Police Captain. Chief Derek Rohde of the Mesquite Police Department sent a letter to Lewisville Police Chief Kerbow, thanking us for allowing Kevin to participate in the process. Chief Rohde went on to say that Kevin’s “experience and insight proved to be extremely helpful in the process to select the best candidate.”

Sex Offender Registration

In the first Chief’s Weekly Update of each month, we note the number of sex offenders residing in the City. As of March 5th, the City of Lewisville has 54 registered sex offenders in residence. That number is up one from April.

Criminal Alien Program

The Criminal Alien Program (CAP) focuses on identifying criminal aliens who are incarcerated within federal, state, and local facilities thereby ensuring that they are not released into the community by securing a final order of removal prior to the termination of their sentence. The identification and processing of incarcerated criminal aliens prior to release reduces the overall cost and burden to the federal government as the number of aliens detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), upon expiration of sentence will be minimized.
During April of 2012, the Lewisville Police Department referred 9 inmates to federal officials, who issued 6 detainers.
