J.M. Rizzi exhibit opens Saturday at MCL Grand
“Here is Now,” an exhibit by artist J.M. Rizzi, will open Saturday, May 28, in the gallery at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street. The show will run through July 4, with an opening reception on May 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. The artist also will be creating a mural on site in the MCL Grand Gallery, starting Wednesday afternoon. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. To schedule group visits during other hours, call 972.219.8446.

Rizzi, better known as JMR, has adapted a unique mixture of neo-abstract expressionism with hints of contemporary pop to create a style all his own. According to Ballista Magazine, his “street art and paintings are vibrant and colorful … alive and spontaneous. The murals he creates seem to be bursting with activity.”

Originally hailing from Brooklyn, Rizzi has grown up with the influences of street art and the established art world constantly around him. Through his own individual, hybrid street style, he has dedicated himself to helping art fit into the outside world. His works range from commissioned pieces for hotels and restaurants to building-sized murals in Manhattan.

“I’ve been able to take the craft that I’ve been honing that comes out of urban life, and open up to the head space of Texas,” said Rizzi, who recently moved to Texas from New York City. “We all come from different places and backgrounds, and we carry these personalities with us wherever we go, but here is now. The bulk of my work is abstract; one can imbue their own personal interpretations.”

Fire Chief Lasky to Retire in the Fall
After 30 years as a professional firefighter, including the past 11 as head of the Lewisville Fire Department, Fire Chief Rick Lasky this week announced his plan to retire this fall and pursue a full-time role as a consultant and educator.

“I enjoy teaching,” Lasky said. “I enjoy the energy of the classroom, the people, and of making a difference in the fire service on a national platform.”

During his tenure as chief, Lewisville Fire Department has expanded to seven stations and has implemented such community-focused programs as After the Fire, Vested for Life, Blaze a Trail for Literacy, and the Lewisville Fire Department Pipe & Drum Corps.

“I can’t help but feel proud of what we have been able to accomplish here as a team in the LFD, “Lasky said. “We’ve added firehouses, apparatus, positions, equipment, and our programs are recognized and imitated nationally. We’ve been able to accomplish a lot together.”

Lasky said he is remaining with the city through the end of September in order to complete the 2011-12 budget process and help develop a multi-year action plan for the proposed Fire Prevention District that will be considered by Lewisville voters in November.

“We have three new engines arriving in late summer and new staff members getting adjusted to their positions, so the need for a smooth leadership transition plan is paramount,” he said.
