March 25, 2012

Application Schedule Announced for City Arts Support Grants
Applications will be accepted starting April 1 for the 2012-13 Arts Support Grants funded by the City of Lewisville and administered through the city’s Arts Advisory Board.

The Arts Advisory Board of the City of Lewisville has announced the beginning of the Arts Grant cycle for Fiscal Year 2012 -2013. Copies of the Grant Guidelines and Application Forms are available on the City of Lewisville website (www.cityoflewisville.com) under the News and Information tab.

Eligibility for the grants is limited to registered not-for-profit, tax-exempt arts organizations with a minimum two-year history of providing cultural services. Grants can only be used to provide cultural programming (performances, exhibitions, etc.) within Lewisville.

In addition, organizations must send a representative to a pre-application training on the grant process, scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street.

During the current fiscal year, grants totaling $154,831 were awarded to six groups to fund performances or exhibitions in Lewisville.

As allowed by State law and as part of its annual budget process, the Lewisville City Council allocates a portion of the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax for advancement and promotion of the arts in Lewisville. The Arts Advisory Board, which is appointed by Council, reviews applications and makes a funding recommendation to Council. The grant year is the same as the city’s fiscal year (Oct. 1 through Sept. 30).

Applications will be accepted through Friday, April 27, at 5 p.m. Applications and support materials can be delivered to Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater or mailed to:
MCL Grand (Attention Jim Wear)

Acting Studio Bringing “Annie the Musical” to MCL Grand
The Acting Studio will present four performances of “Annie the Musical” on April 5-7 at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, the latest in a growing string of quality musicals taking the stage at the city-run facility.

Shows start at 7 p.m. each night, plus a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. Tickets are $17 for adults, $13 for children ages 12 and younger. To order tickets, visit http://ActingStudioTX.tix.com or call 817.488.0009. Advance tickets cannot be purchased at MCL Grand.

Much-beloved on Broadway and community stages alike, “Annie the Musical” tells the story of a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find the parents who years ago left her on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan.

In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan’s despicable plans, befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and finds a new family and home with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

In addition to the heart-warming story of its young protaganist, “Annie the Musical” is known for such memorable tunes as “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard-Knock Life.” The musical is based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip by Harold Gray and also was made into a popular Hollywood feature film in 1982. The original Broadway run in 1977 won a Tony Award for “Best Musical.”

The Acting Studio is operated in Grapevine by owners Shane and Erica Peterman, both of whom are members of the Actors’ Equity Association with dozens of performing credits in the United States and Europe. Professional staff at The Acting Studio teach classes in voice, dance and acting for stage and film for students of all ages, including classes for younger children ages 3-7 up through adults. Students have the opportunity to perform in local shows as well as regional tours.

For information about The Acting Studio, call 817.488.0009 or visit www.ActingStudioTX.com.

LakeCities Ballet Theatre Brings “Insights on Dance” to MCL Grand
LakeCities Ballet Theatre will close its 27th season with two presentations of “Insights on Dance” scheduled for April 13-14 at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater. This entertaining journey into the world of ballet and dance will include George Balanchine’s “Concerto Barocco” presented by arrangement with The New York City Ballet. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance at En L’Air Dancewear, 1400 FM 407 in Lewisville, or online at www.lakecitiesballet.org.

“Insights on Dance” combines video interviews with the creators of each work, along with brief selections of dance history through the ages. After each video, the audience will witness a live performance of that particular dance with a much better understanding of its place in ballet history and the creative process behind its development.

On-screen hosts Kelly Lannin, LakeCities Ballet Theatre artistic director, and Tom Rutherford, LBT art director, will describe the concept of the dances presented and the inspiration behind their development. Video cutaways to rehearsals and interviews with dancers provide further insight on the collaboration between dancers and choreographers, giving the audience an understanding of the physical and emotional contributions of the actual dancer.

Those who already love classical dance, or those who are just developing an interest, are invited to experience this wonderfully varied exposé on the art and history of dance. Listen, from Copeland to Walton, and watch, from Bergasse to Balanchine, as composers, choreographers and dancers take the audience on a compelling journey of understanding through the world of dance.
