The band will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, to close out the long-time local festival that is being expanded to two days this year. Other performers booked for the main stage include Kevin Fowler on Friday night and Micky & the Motorcars on Saturday. The festival is free, but a ticket is required. Tickets will be available around Sept. 1 on the city’s website, www.cityoflewisville.com, and through entertainment sponsor 99.5 The Wolf. Planned activities at Western Days, designed to showcase Lewisville’s rich history, include a parade down Main and Mill Streets, two festival stages of live music, arts and crafts vendors, gunfight re-enactments, trick ropers, car show, Longhorn cattle drive, Tailwaggers Ranch pet zone, Stickhorse Rodeo for kids, and the sixth annual World Tamale Eating Championship. Western Days activities (including a children’s area, craft vendors, live music, and Western-style re-enactments and demonstrations) will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. The Old West will come alive for festival-goers at Cowboy Camp, a re-enactment of an Old West trail drive featuring demonstrations and presentations throughout the day in such areas as camp cooking, livestock handling and more. Gunfighters will roam the festival ground, staging battles on Main Street at various times during the festival. The World Tamale Eating Championship, an official Major League Eating event sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating, will award a $1,500 grand prize to the competitor who downs the most Dallas Tortilla & Tamale Factory tamales in 12 minutes. It will start at 1 p.m. Saturday on the front steps of Lewisville City Hall. Last year’s title was won by Juliet Lee, the event’s first female champion, who ate 48 tamales in 12 minutes. The world record is 71 tamales in 12 minutes consumed by two-time champion Tim Janus of New York. Registration is conducted by the IFOCE through its website, www.ifoce.com. The popular Western Days Parade & Longhorn Cattle Drive will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Response Camp Receives Award The City of Lewisville Xtreme Response Camp was awarded the DFW Area Parks & Recreation Directors Association Innovation in Programming Award for 2009-10. The award was presented to Summer Wilhelm and Wayne Pickett at the annual awards luncheon held in Grand Prairie on June 11, 2010. The Xtreme Response Camp was offered for the first time during the Summer 2009 Session. The Camp idea was conceived by the Emergency Management Division of the Lewisville Fire Department and the Parks & Leisure Services Department Recreation Division. The intended purpose of the camp was to educate kids on disaster preparedness and response functions during incidents. This program offered an innovative way to engage the 12-15 age group in disaster preparedness and response. The camp was also used to highlight public safety career opportunities to this age group and promote Explorer programs. Summer Wilhelm, Emergency Management Coordinator, developed the curriculum for the program and worked with several City Departments and outside agencies to develop presentations and content for each session. Laura Walker, Recreation Specialist, provided promotional support and assisted in registration. Adult Summer Reading Program: Where will reading take you?
