Officers Take Part in Tobacco Compliance Check
Neighborhood Resource Officers and the School Resource Officers recently completed a “Tobacco Compliance Check” of 15 local stores that sell tobacco. Out of 15 stores checked, only one sold a tobacco product to a minor. A citation was issued to the clerk for sale of tobacco product to a juvenile. The check was part of an ongoing program by the Lewisville Police Department that focuses on education and prevention of sales of tobacco products to minors.

Largest Summer Program Registration in Library’s History!
The Lewisville Public Library’s 2011 Summer Reading program offers exciting classes and events to “develop and support lifelong education” and “create young readers.” Registration for the Summer Reading program increased by 16% across all ages over last year’s program; teen participants increased 20% and pre-readers almost 35%. More than 4,000 persons attended reading and educational events during the month of June. Area business sponsors donated reading incentive coupons, books, and prizes valued at over $69,000 in support of the program. A partnership with the Lewisville Morning Rotary International Teacher Exchange program enabled the library to again offer a month-long Spanish language class series for students ages 10-14. The classes were taught by instructors from Mexico and attendance was more than twice as large as last summer. A recent traveling exhibit celebrating the art of Ancient Egypt, King Tut’s Tomb, hieroglyphs, and more was hosted by the library and enjoyed by visitors of all ages. The Library continues to offer workforce development computer training with MS Word and MS Excel classes. Classes are regularly filled to capacity
