CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE Advanced Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory Chooses Lewisville Location for Headquarters Leading companies in the field of clinical trials, molecular diagnostics and oncology have joined forces to create a new venture focused on the delivery of personalized patient care. This new company is to be headquartered in Lewisville. Currently undergoing a campaign to form its corporate identity, company leadership has selected ConVergence Office Campus as the site for its operations. The company will bring upwards of 900 jobs, $67.2 million in annual payroll and $10 million in investment to Lewisville. The City’s Economic Development Division worked with the leadership team over several months to advocate for the Lewisville location. Site development for the project is currently underway, and the company is anticipated to begin operations in 2010. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Homebuyer Program Meetings Economic Development and Planning staff invited real estate and lending partners to a meeting to provide input on revisions to the First-time Homebuyer Assistance Program. The CDBG Advisory Committee has given staff direction to make changes to the program that assisted 16 low-to-moderate income families to purchase their first home last year. In each of the last two years, program funding has run out before the end of the year. Revisions to the program are designed to assist as many home buyers as possible by making some reductions to the level of benefits. Revisions are also being considered to update and clarify various policies and procedures. On Wednesday, Jan. 13, several program partners attended a meeting at City Hall to provide in-depth input about the program. Attending were Michael Scott, Sales Manager, Bank of America; Dr. Ara Minassian, Texas Mortgage Team & Real Living Lone Star Realtors; Bea Mitchell, Mortgage Loan Consultant, First United Mortgage Bank; Eyad Salloum, Broker Associate, Remax; Mark Chew, Broker/Agent, Harold Carter Realtors; and Tamela Bowie, Chair of the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee. On January 19, the CDBG Advisory Committee met and reviewed the draft revisions to the First-time Homebuyer Assistance Program. Staff related the comments and key discussions from the previous meeting. The committee gave staff further direction for revisions that will be ready for their final recommendation for City Council in February. The committee also established a time-line for proposals for CDBG grant funding and will hear presentations from applicants on Saturday, March 27, 2010. Fire Department News KnoWhat2Do Unveils Youth Component at Press Conference The Emergency Management Division participated in the unveiling of the youth component of the KnoWhat2Do Program on Wednesday, January 13th at a press conference. Summer Wilhelm presented the new components to the media. The new components can be seen by visiting www.knowhat2do.com/kids. Certification Division Chief Terry McGrath and his K9 partner Retha attended annual K9 certification administered by the ATF. The certification was held in Arlington at the Cowboys Stadium and the Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. There were 27 canine teams from the Western Region that participated in the certification. TEEX Leadership Symposium Nine LFD personnel attended the TEEX Leadership Symposium in Frisco last Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The attendees listened to lectures on a variety of firefighting topics from some of the top firefighter instructors in the nation. All of the attendees received firefighter C.E. credits for the courses that they attended, and came away with a lot of good leadership ideas and fundamentals for leading the fire service. Wellness Week at the Senior Center The Lewisville Senior Center recently completed Wellness Week, a new program that emphasizes all aspects of wellness. Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. The week consisted of classes, educational seminars, exercise classes and fun activities. Seniors attended these sessions and won prizes for their attendance. The week concluded with a healthy lunch. Alley Closure for Storm Drain Repairs The City of Lewisville Street Division will be making storm drain repairs behind 1902 and 1904 Hidden Trail. The alley will be closed to through traffic; homeowners can enter from Babbling Brook Dr. Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 25, 2010, and be completed on Monday, February 1, 2010 weather permitting. This will require that trash be placed in front of the residences until the work has been completed. Work is being performed in the areas listed below. Use caution in these work zones. Street Repairs Street panel & sidewalk repairs on Valley Ridge between Mill and I-35 Making sidewalk/ADA repairs on W. Main, Bellaire, Kealy, Corporate, S. Valley Pkwy., and Uecker Sanitary Sewer Line and Manhole Repairs Main line cleaning and video inspecting on Corporate Drive and on Forestbrook Video inspecting a service line on Grove Ct. to locate a problem area.
