CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE Visual Art League, Wildlife Preserve Combine for First MCL Grand Gallery Show The first gallery show at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater will feature “plein aire” paintings by members of the Visual Art League (VAL), being presented in conjunction with the center’s grand opening weekend on Jan. 14-16. Additional information on the grand opening celebration is available at www.cityoflewisville.com. An opening reception for the artists is planned for Saturday, Jan. 15, 6:30- 8 p.m. in the gallery, located at 100 N. Charles Street between Main and Church streets. The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit, titled “Fresh Air - Scenes from LLELA,” will open Friday, Jan. 14, and continue through Feb. 19. The show is a collaboration of VAL, the City of Lewisville and the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area. “Plein aire” comes from the French phrase meaning “in the open air.” Throughout 2010, VAL member artist Murthy Mantha facilitated workshops at LLELA in order to create works of art based on the surrounding natural environment. VAL artists employed a variety of media and styles to highlight different aspects of the 2,000-acre LLELA preserve. Participating artists are: Ken Caperton, David Mask, Murthy Mantha, Connie Nicholson, Bekah Jewel, Wanda Grice, Barbara Barnett, Cheryl Sterling, Jackie Haugen, Marty Green, Colleen Drew, Lynne Richards, Owen Richards, Fred Gardner, Dan Lattimore, Christi Gause, Mary McNeely, Dan Flake, Wendy Frye, Valerie Corwin, Tina Alvarez, Joyce Boyd, Arthur Graye, Chuck Hendrickson, Neil Elliott, Bev Zerbe, Louie Kruse, Elaine Nienkamp, Andrea Szaboky, Paula Haynes, Alice Brennan, R'Lene Winters, Dulce Ruque, Sherry Reynolds and Darla Bostick. By showcasing the natural beauty of LLELA in their artworks, the artists also are reminding visitors of how important it is to preserve this distinctive venue for future generations. “We are honored to help draw attention to this often overlooked area of Lewisville,” said Rebekah Almquist, president of the Visual Art League. LLELA is a wildlife preserve comprising more than 2,000 acres of prairies, forests and wetlands. It is managed by a group of agencies that includes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, University of North Texas, City of Lewisville, Lewisville ISD and Texas A & M University. The stated mission of LLELA is “to preserve and restore our native ecosystems and to provide and promote environmental education and scientific research.” Visual Art League is one of six local groups receiving funding from the Greater Lewisville Arts Alliance through a City of Lewisville grant program designed to foster cultural and fine arts in the community. For information on Visual Art League, please visit www.visualartleague.org or call 972.420.9393. City Orders More Trout for Trinity River Stocking Texas Parks & Wildlife, in conjunction with the City of Lewisville and the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area, will stock the Elm Fork of the Trinity River with more than 5,500 rainbow trout this winter as part of an ongoing program to boost the fish population and encourage recreational use of the river. In addition to the state stockings, the city has ordered 250 pounds of larger trout (weighing about one pound each) that will be placed in the river on the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 6. The state will release additional fingerlings on two remaining dates – Jan. 14 and Feb. 18 – below the Lewisville Dam spillway into the river. The first release took place on Dec. 17. The fish were raised at Crystal Lake Fisheries in Ava, Montana, and are being transported from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center near Athens, Texas. Actual stocking dates are dependent on weather, so anglers should call the hatchery at 903.676.2277 to verify. Trout anglers will need to purchase a $5 Freshwater Fishing Stamp for their valid Texas fishing license in order to catch the trout. Anglers under 17 years of age are not required to have a license or stamp. There is no minimum length limit for trout, but there is a daily bag limit of five. Residents Able to Recycle Live Christmas Trees, Unwanted Holiday Lights Recycling live Christmas trees helps to reduce waste, extend landfill life, provides useful compost and saves money. Now through Jan. 15, live Christmas trees can be dropped off at Lewisville Lake Park, near the soccer fields, to be recycled into mulch. All nails, wire, ornaments, lights and tinsel must be removed prior to dropping off trees. Also through Jan. 15, free mulch will be available to residents for use in yards, gardens and flower beds, walkways, around trees and shrubs or for livestock bedding. The event is sponsored by Keep Lewisville Beautiful and Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services. For more information, call KLB at 972.538.5949 or PALS at 972.219.3550. In addition, residents are encouraged to recycle any unwanted holiday lights, working or otherwise. These lights contain glass, copper, and plastics that can be recovered and made into new products. Lights can be dropped off at the Lewisville locations of The Home Depot and Lowe’s. Another way to recycle holiday lights is to participate in a national mail-back program offered by HolidayLEDs.com. This program offers 25 percent off the purchase of LED Christmas lights (through Jan. 31) when sending in old lights for recycling. More information is available at http://www.holidayleds.com/holidayledscom_christmas_light_recycling_program.
