Inclement Weather Impacts Trash and Recycling Collection

A special collection of recycling that was missed during the week of February 1 will take place during the week of February 7 on resident’s usual recycling day.

“88 Keys” Campaign Begins Raising Money for Concert Piano
Volunteers have kicked off an “88 Keys” fund-raising campaign to purchase a 9-foot concert grand piano for the Performance Hall at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater. The effort got off to a fast start during the facility’s Grand Opening celebration when the Greater Lewisville Arts Alliance (GLAA) made a $25,000 donation. The gift was announced at the Jan. 16 dedication ceremony by GLAA President Neal Ferguson.

“We searched for a specific unmet purpose and ultimately identified the need for a special piano for this very special theater,” Ferguson said when he presented the check to Lewisville Mayor Dean Ueckert.

Arts Center Manager Jim Wear has worked with Steinway to identify the piano model best suited for the layout and acoustics of the performance hall. Their selection, a Steinway ‘D’ Concert Grand, carries a price tag of about $120,000. In an effort to raise that money, the City and Steinway are working alongside local volunteers on an “88 Keys” campaign. After the GLAA donation, along with other individual pledges made during the Grand Opening weekend, a total of $30,600 has been raised.

Named for the number of keys on a standard piano, the program gives donors a chance to “purchase” one or more keys or make smaller donations toward the overall goal. Each “key” costs $1,400. All donors will be publicly recognized at the end of the campaign.

Wear said conducting a public fund-raising campaign will give members of the greater Lewisville community a chance to be a part of the new MCL Grand and develop a sense of ownership in the facility. “We want the residents and businesses of Lewisville and Southern Denton County to think of this as their arts center, and to have a sense of pride when they attend events here,” Wear said.

Dr. Pamela Mia Paul, Regents Professor of Piano at the University of North Texas and a member of the 88 Keys organizing committee, makes a strong case for the importance of having a fine piano in a concert hall. “The limits of the instrument help define the limits of expression for the artist. A great instrument makes possible great performances by great artists.”

Other members of the 88 Keys organizing committee include Peggy Atkerson, Maestro Adron Ming, Ian Cleghorn and Nancy Wright.

Pledge cards for the campaign are available by e-mailing Arts Center Manager Jim Wear at jwear@cityoflewisville.com. Donations to the “MCL Grand Piano Fund” also can be made by cash, check payable to City of Lewisville, or credit card at the Customer Service window at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, during regular business hours. All donations are tax deductible.

Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, located at 100 N. Charles Street, between Main and Church streets, opened its doors this month. The 40,000-square-foot facility features a 296-seat proscenium theater, black box theater, dance recital hall, art gallery, five art classrooms and a large courtyard. Medical Center of Lewisville reached a multi-year agreement with the city last year for naming rights at the center.

Soccer Group Makes Donation to Lewisville Lake Park
All eight soccer fields of the Bob Wiseman Soccer Complex at Lewisville Lake Park will receive new goals prior to the spring season thanks to a donation by the Greater Lewisville Area Soccer Association. The donation, valued at $39,000, was formally accepted by the Lewisville City Council at its Jan. 24 meeting. The new goals are of a lighter material than the current equipment, making for easier reconfiguring of fields for various leagues and tournaments. The goals will be comparable to those being used at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park.
