CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE Early Voting Continues in City Council Special Election Early voting continues through Tuesday in a special election to fill the vacant Place 2 seat on the Lewisville City Council. Voters can cast early ballots on Dec. 5-6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. The election will fill the vacancy caused by the death of Councilman David Thornhill in September. There are three candidates vying for the office – Steve Hill, Neil Ferguson and Matt Lampe. Election Day voting will be held at the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. Poll will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. Housing and Community Development Meetings The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Advisory Committee will be holding a public hearing on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at 6 p.m. at Lewisville City Hall, 3rd Floor, 151 W. Church St. Residents and community stakeholders are being asked to attend and provide input on housing and community development priorities and goals for the 2012 Housing and Community Development Consolidated Plan. The City of Lewisville’s Economic Development and Planning Department will host a Fair Housing Focus Group on Thursday, December 8, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church St. Real estate, housing, mortgage, and related professionals are being asked to attend to discuss the City's housing policies and fair housing conditions. Animal Services News Lewisville Animal Services held its first off-site adoption event, "Paws in the Park," at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park on Saturday, November 12th. It was considered a great success. Several dogs from the animal shelter were adopted, as well as countless others from participating rescues and other municipal shelters. Animal Services hopes to hold this event annually. Also, Supervisor Laura Wise and Animal Control Officer, Matt Powell, represented Animal Services in the LISD Central Elementary School "College and Career Day" event on Friday, November 18th. They spoke to five 3rd-grade classes for 15 minutes each about the types of careers available in Animal Services and how, in the ever-increasing popularity of animal-related jobs, a college degree in Animal Science or a related field is beneficial. Lewisville Library Hosts Agency Round Table The Town of Flower Mound and City of Lewisville held a joint Agency Round Table Friday, Nov. 11 at the Lewisville Public Library. Jennifer Bekker, Adult Services Supervisor, provided an overview of resources and research tools available through the library. Agency Round Tables provide a forum for local non-profits to share and discuss items of interest. Police Department Awards The Lewisville Police Department named Detective Richard Anders as Officer of the Third Quarter, 2011 and Kristy Fitzgerald (Dispatcher II) as Civilian of the Third Quarter, 2011. Both employees were recognized for their outstanding job performance. City Facilities Serve as Collection Sites for Texas Guard Toy Drive Collection boxes have been placed at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, and Lewisville Public Library, 1197 W. Main Street, for the annual “Young Heroes of the Guard” toy drive conducted by members of the Texas State Guard. Toys collected will be donated to young patients at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, and Our Children’s House at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Members of 4th CA Regiment and 4th Air Wing of the Texas State Guard will pick up the toys from local collection centers on Thursday, Dec. 15, and deliver them to the hospitals on Dec. 17. Christmas Storefront Window Displays Return to Old Town Window shopping takes a festive turn this month in Historic Old Town Lewisville with the return of the annual Holiday Window Display Tour presented by Old Town Business Association. Now in its fifth year, this family favorite includes professional window displays designed by Texas native Heather Grace. Each features a combination of décor, lights and in some cases motion. Participating businesses are located along Main Street between Charles and Mill streets, in the heart of the historic district. Popular displays from past years that are returning this month include a furnished miniature family home decked out for the season, a wintery wilderness scene, and a revolving Christmas tree in metallic colors. The newest addition to the storefront tour is a display featuring birdhouses. Old Town Business Association is a volunteer group of local businesses that works to promote the Old Town commercial district through special events, marketing programs and advertising. MCL Grand Offers Busy Entertainment Lineup in December Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater (MCL Grand), the city-run arts center that opened in January 2011, will bring more than 25 public performances to Lewisville during December including stage productions, choral music and the world-famous Three Redneck Tenors. GLCT Presents “Nuncrackers” for December Run Greater Lewisville Community Theatre will present the delightfully entertaining holiday favorite, Nuncrackers, the Nunsense Christmas Musical, running Dec. 2-18. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Due to the popularity of this show, an additional performance has been scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 15, at 8 p.m. Tickets for Nuncrackers are $18 per person, $15 for anyone age 65 and older or age 18 and younger. For reservations, call 972.221.7469 (SHOW). Greater Lewisville Community Theatre is located at 160 W. Main Street in Old Town Lewisville. Dan Goggin’s beloved sisters are at it again in this hilarious holiday offering from the Nunsense series. This time, Reverend Mother Regina is back with her own cable access channel and ready to put on a holiday ballet to support the Mount Saint Helens Convent. But when her star performer is injured, the Reverend Mother has to resort to some wacky hijinks to ensure that the show goes on. Featuring original songs including Twelve Days Prior to Christmas, Santa Ain’t Comin’ To Our House, and We Three Kings of Orient Are Us, this show is filled with “Nunsense” humor, favorite carols, a “Secret Santa,” and an uproarious take on Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet. Director Sharon Veselic, who previously directed GLCT hits The Rocky Horror Show and Jekyll and Hyde, has assembled a cast of experienced actor/singers from across the Metroplex to make this holiday show a memorable and joy-filled occasion. Greater Lewisville Community Theatre is one of six local arts organizations receiving grant funding in 2011-12 from the City of Lewisville. The Colony Playhouse Presents “Best Christmas Pageant” at MCL Grand The Colony Playhouse will present six performances of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” on Dec. 9-11 and Dec. 16-18 at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater. Evening shows will start at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday both weekends, with a 3 p.m. matinee both Sundays. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and can be purchased by visiting www.TheColonyPlayhouse.org or calling 972.625.1726. Advance tickets cannot be purchased at MCL Grand. In this hilarious tale, a couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant is faced with casting the Herdman kids, who are probably the most inventively awful kids in history. Through the course of the play, the Herdmans learn the true meaning of Christmas – and help the people around them to remember the heart of the season as well. This delightful comedy is adapted from the best-selling book by Barbara Robinson. The performance at MCL Grand is directed by Martin Mussey and produced by special permission with Samuel French, Inc. The Colony Playhouse is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enrich, educate and entertain the community by providing a superior experience in theatre and performing arts. The goal is to create theater by children, for children, and create an artistic experience in which whole families can participate. Christmas Tree Recycling Program Runs Through Jan. 18 Recycling Christmas trees helps to reduce waste, extend landfill life, provides useful compost and saves money. Starting Dec. 15 and running through Jan. 18, Christmas trees can be dropped off at the Lewisville Lake Park soccer fields (near Lake Park Road and North Mill Street) to be recycled into mulch. Trees must be stripped of all nails, wire, ornaments, lights and tinsel prior to being dropped off. Free mulch will be available at the dropoff site between Dec. 30, and Jan 18, suitable for use in yards, gardens and flower beds, walkways, around trees and shrubs or for livestock bedding. LLELA Offers “Homestead Christmas” Experience on Dec. 10 Area families are invited to experience Christmas the truly old-fashioned way during Homestead Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA). The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the historic Minor-Porter Log House, where visitors can tour the cabin, make a corn husk doll or an ornament to take home, create a hand-dipped candle, enjoy seasonal music and snacks, and more. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the structures. Visitors are welcome to arrive at any time during the event and join in at their own pace. There is no additional fee for this activity beyond regular LLELA admission to LLELA of $5 per person, free for children ages 5 and younger. Other events at LLELA this month:
· Guided Nature Walk, Saturday, Dec. 10, 10 a.m. Explore the Cicada Trail with a Texas Master Naturalist in this guided search for animal tracks and signs, and learn more about the natural history of LLELA. There is a $2 program fee, in addition to the regular gate fee. Reservations are requested, but not required. Participants should bring sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water. · Trout Fishing in the Elm Fork, starting Dec. 18. Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife will stock rainbow trout in the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, below Lewisville Lake Dam, on Dec. 17 and Jan. 13. There are always plenty of fish in the river, but the trout are a special winter treat. Appropriate state fishing license is required. · Paddle the Elm Fork, Saturday, Dec. 17. Kayak Power provides equipment and instruction followed by a six-mile trip down the Elm Fork to a shuttle vehicle. Paddlers of all skill levels are welcome. Street and Sidewalk Repairs on Cypress Drive The City of Lewisville Street Division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Cypress Dr. The west entrance to the Cypress Dr. alley will be closed for repairs beginning on Monday, December 5, 2011, and re-opened by Friday, December 9, 2011, weather permitting. No driveways will be affected. Residents may still enter the alley from Deer Run, Creekmeadow, or Meadowglen Dr. The east entrance to the alley between Kirkwood Dr. and Windwood Dr. will also be closed for repairs beginning on Monday, December 5, 2011, and re-opened by Friday, December 9, 2011, weather permitting. No driveways will be affected.
