EFFECTIVE AUGUST 30, 2010
NEW ANIMAL ADOPTION PROCEDURES

In order to ensure compliance with Texas State Law, Chapters 826 and 828 of the Health and Safety Code, which require all adopted shelter animals to be vaccinated for rabies and to be sterilized, Lewisville Animal Services is implementing the following procedures for every adoption.

*Adult Animals (Four months or older):
Once you have selected an animal, a Lewisville Animal Control Officer will deliver your new pet to a participating veterinarian of your choice within the Lewisville city limits to be examined, sterilized (spayed or neutered) and vaccinated for rabies. You will then pick up your new pet from the veterinarian’s office and the Adoption Agreement will be complete.

*Young Animals:
If you have selected an animal younger than four (4) months of age, then a Lewisville Animal Control Officer will deliver your new pet to a participating veterinarian of your choice within the Lewisville city limits to confirm age, health status, and due date of sterilization and rabies vaccination. You will then pick up the animal from the veterinarian and will be fully responsible for returning the animal for the required sterilization surgery and rabies vaccination as of the due date listed on the contract.
*Previously Sterilized Animals:
In some cases an animal may already be sterilized. If Animal Services has proof of this, then the animal will still be delivered by a Lewisville Animal Control Officer to a local participating veterinarian to receive a rabies vaccination. You will then pick the animal up from the veterinarian's office and the Adoption Agreement will be complete.

*Previously Sterilized and Vaccinated Animals:
If Lewisville Animal Services has proof that the animal has already been sterilized AND vaccinated for rabies, then you only pay the adoption fee and you take the new pet home directly from the shelter at the time of adoption.

****IN EVERY ADOPTION****

-There is a one-time adoption fee of $20 (regardless of age or species) payable to the City of Lewisville.

-An additional $8.00 fee will be charged for a discounted rabies coupon honored by Lewisville veterinarians for all adopted animals.
