New Emergency System Requires Citizens to Sign Up
The City of Lewisville has implemented a new emergency notification system called DeltAlert. This system will work very similar to the city’s previous emergency system, CodeRED, with a few enhancements. The new system offers a feature to alert residents and businesses of severe weather automatically and will feed the city's social media accounts. However, those interested in the service must sign up, as the CodeRED data will not migrate to the new system. In order to use the new system, visit cityoflewisville.com to sign up for DeltAlert.

Zoning Board of Adjustment Meeting
The Zoning Board of Adjustment at their April 4, 2012, meeting unanimously (5-0) approved the variance request to allow the existing concession stand to remain encroaching into the front yard setback at the Lewisville Rodeo Grounds located on Parkway Drive.

Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting
The Planning and Zoning Commission, at their April 3, 2012, meeting unanimously recommended that City Council approve the following two zone change requests:

- Consideration of a zone change request from Agricultural Open Space (AO) to Light Industrial (LI) Zoning District, on 0.38 acres, located at 565 Bennett Lane; further identified as Edmund A. Day Survey, Abstract No. 11, Tract 41, as requested by Danny Bucy, the property owner (Case No. PZ-2012-04-04).

- Consideration of a zone change request from Agricultural Open Space (AO) to Public Use (PU) Zoning District, on approximately 8.3 acres, bounded by Parkway Drive to the south, Mill Street to the west and Kealy Avenue to the east; further identified as Proposed Lot 1, Block A, Lewisville Rodeo Grounds Addition as requested the City of Lewisville, the property owner (Case No. PZ-2012-04-05).

Teen Court Team Places First at North Texas Competition
On Saturday, March 24, Texas Teen Courts competed in Mock Trials at the Wesleyan Law School in Fort Worth. The Lewisville/Flower Mound Teen Court won first place, beating Longview and Fort Worth for the top honor.

More than 150 youth, law students, judges, and volunteers participated in the event, with 20 teams competing. The Lewisville/Flower Mound team included Madeleine Loney, Emily Tetsch, Jeremy Scroggs (former teen court volunteer), Laurie Yonkers (Teen Court Coordinator), Haddy Badjie and Aliya Kuykendall.

Participating courts included: Collin County, Fort Worth, Georgetown, Wichita County, Burleson, HEB, Plano, Coppell, Longview, Odessa and Lewisville/Flower Mound. Local Judges, law students, and attorneys presided over the cases. During the trials, students played the role of defendant or witness, as well as a defense or prosecuting attorney. They were evaluated on their courtroom skills and demeanor.

Lewisville/Flower Mound Teen Court is held twice a month on Tuesday nights to hear Class C misdemeanor cases involving teen-aged defendants. Sentences are made in the form of community service hours and future Teen Court jury terms. If the sentence is completed successfully, the case is dismissed and the youth does not have a conviction on their record.

City Calls for Water Conservation Poster Contestants
The City of Lewisville invites children in Kindergarten through fifth grade to enter their artwork in the 8th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest. Entries are due April 16. Awards for the winners will be presented at a Lewisville City Council meeting in May.

In celebration of National Drinking Water Week and Public Utilities Awareness Week in May, the City of Lewisville will focus on increasing public awareness and involvement in drinking water issues. The Department of Public Services is sponsoring a poster contest to help promote water conservation. The theme of this year’s contest is “Water Wonderful: Ways to Save.”

All artwork must reflect the theme and be original, be on a legal size sheet of paper and submitted to the Lewisville Public Library, 1197 W. Main Street, by Wednesday, April 16. Winning posters will be exhibited at the library, Lewisville City Hall, LVTV Channel 15 and at cityoflewisville.com.

“A Grand Night for Swing” Being Held Fridays at MCL Grand
“A Grand Night for Swing,” featuring East Coast Swing lessons for beginners followed by an evening dance, is being held Friday evenings in the Recital Hall at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street. Admission is $10 at the door ($5 for seniors and students). Classes start at 8 p.m. lead by professional instructors. The open dance for all skill levels is from 9 p.m. until midnight with a DJ playing Swing classics as well as modern tunes. No aerial tricks will be taught or allowed at the dance (except by special guest performers). Street clothes are acceptable, as well as more formal attire, but flat footwear with minimal tread is recommended. For more information, call 972.219.8446.

Westwood Estates II Improvements
The City of Lewisville staff held a public neighborhood meeting last year regarding reconstruction of the streets in Westwood Estates II. Due to design complications the City has been unable to start construction at the beginning of this year. Design is now expected to be completed in April 2012. After the bidding process is complete and a construction contract with a contractor has been executed, a brief public neighborhood meeting will be held for those interested in meeting the contractor. The meeting is anticipated to be held in July 2012 with the start of construction to follow.

The streets within the project limits are Briarwood Drive, Ashwood Drive, Springwood Drive, Cedarwood Drive, Elmwood Drive north of Fox Avenue, Redwood Drive, Firewood Drive, Janwood Drive, Fernwood Drive, Lynwood Place, Westwood Place, Pinewood Place, and Eastwood Place.

Medication Disposal Day Set for April 28
The City of Lewisville is teaming up with Lewisville Independent School District and the Drug Enforcement Agency to hold a Medication Disposal Day on April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The goal of this operation is to reduce the risk of prescription drug abuse and increase awareness of public health. As with past events, the Lewisville disposal location will be the parking lot of Lewisville High School, 1098 West Main Street. Other locations include Flower Mound High School, Hebron Valley Elementary, Marcus High School and The Colony High School. For more locations, visit www.dea.gov. Craft-o-Rama
Craft-o-Rama is a craft time especially for 4th and 5thgraders (ages 9-11), on April 25, 4:30 p.m. Space for each class is limited. To sign up, or for more information, please contact the Youth Services Desk of the Lewisville Public Library at 972.219.3577.

LegoMania!
On Sunday, April 22, 2-3 p.m., the Lewisville Public Library’s LegoMania will be held in the Bennett Program Room. Children under 6 years old must be accompanied by an adult in the program. Teen Role Playing Sessions
Take a lead, outwit cunning villains, solve puzzles and unravel mysteries with Teen Role Playing Sessions on Monday nights. On April 16, role players will enjoy One for All: Régime Diabolique, and April 9 and 23 with the library’s new game, Astra Imperius: Rogue Trader. All Role Playing Sessions are from 6-8:30 p.m. in Teen Point (second floor of the library). Teens age 12-18 are welcome.

Lewisville Public Library Teen Advisory Group
On April 19, at 7 p.m., teens can help create the experiences they would like to see at the library. Develop leadership skills, learn to work as a team, and earn community service hours by picking up an application at the youth service desk, and come to the meetings on the third Thursday of the month.

Watercolor Demonstration at the MCL Grand April 10
Visual Art League of Lewisville will present a watercolor demonstration by Cecy Turner on Tuesday, April 10, 7 p.m. at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street. Visual Art League is one of six local organizations receiving funding this year through the city’s Arts Support Grants program. Garden Secrets Class Focuses on Bees
Keep Lewisville Beautiful will hold a free Garden Secrets class at the Lewisville Public Library’s Crawford Room on Thursday, April 19, 6-7 p.m. To reserve a seat, call 972.538.5949 or send email to info@keeplewisvillebeautiful.org.

This informative class on bees is the perfect class for those interested in general knowledge about honey bees, why beekeeping is important, plants that bees love, how to start keeping bees and some of the different products that can be used from the beehive. The key speaker for the class, Shelby Killpatrick, is an active Denton County 4-H member and a master gardener intern.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful Seeks Yard of the Month Nominations
Keep Lewisville Beautiful recognizes one residence and one business each month, from April through October, as the Yard of the Month. Nominations are now being accepted for residences and businesses in the Lewisville area. Those nominating yards should identify the nominee’s address only. The person’s name and phone number making the nomination is optional. All nominations must be in by the 20th of each month. Photos of each property will be displayed on the KLB website by the 25th of each month for public voting. All winners will be posted on the website at the beginning of each month.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful’s Clean-up Event Set for April 21
Keep Lewisville Beautiful will celebrate its 26th annual Citywide Cleanup on Saturday, April 21. The free event will be held in conjunction with the Keep Texas Beautiful Trash Off and the Keep America Beautiful Great American Clean Up activities.

Volunteers are needed for cleanup teams and on-site help. Sign-in and registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Residential Convenience Center parking lot, 330 Jones Street. Cleanup is from 9 a.m. to noon. Lunch is provided along with door prizes, goody bags and t-shirts. All ages are welcome to attend. Register online today at keeplewisvillebeautiful.org.

Last year, 208 volunteers showed community spirit by working hard and picking up 3.42 tons of litter off Lewisville streets, parks, open lots and creeks.

In addition to volunteers, KLB is looking for sponsors and donations for the door prize raffle. Businesses can make monetary donations or become sponsors by providing raffle prizes or items for goody bags given out to all participants.

Alley Repairs Between Royal Oaks Ln. and Valley View
The City of Lewisville Street Division will be making alley repairs between Royal Oaks Ln. and Valley View. The alley will be closed to through traffic. Homeowners can enter from Valley View Dr. or Royal Oaks Ln. Construction began on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, and is scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, weather permitting. This will require that trash for collection be placed in front of the residences until the work has been completed.

Street and Sidewalk Repairs on Creek Ct.
The City of Lewisville Street Division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Creek Ct. Work began on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 and is scheduled to be completed by Friday, April 20, 2012, weather permitting. Due to the use of heavy equipment, please use caution when transiting the area. Drivers should expect lane closures.

Street and Sidewalk Repairs on Continental Dr.
The City of Lewisville Street Division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Continental Dr. and Creek Ct. The southern entrance to the alley that serves houses on Continental Dr., off of Creek Ct., was closed for repairs beginning on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, and will be re-opened by Monday, April 9, 2012, weather permitting. Residents will still be able to enter the alley from the Continental Dr. entrance.

Street and Sidewalk Repairs on Burr Oak Dr. and Blair Oak Dr.
The City of Lewisville Street Division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Burr Oak Dr. and Blair Oak Dr. The northern entrance to the alley off Blair Oak Dr. was closed for repairs beginning on Thursday, April 5, 2012, and will be re-opened by Monday, April 9, 2012, weather permitting. Residents may still enter the alley from the south end.

Additional street and sidewalk repairs Burr Oak Dr. will result in the southern entrance to the alley off Burr Oak Dr. being closed for repairs beginning on Monday, April 9, 2012, and re-opening by Friday, April 13, 2012, weather permitting. Residents may still enter the alley from Timberbrook Ln.

Street and Sidewalk Repairs on Continental Dr.
The City of Lewisville Street Division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Continental Dr. The northern entrance to the alley that serves houses on Continental Dr., will be closed for repairs beginning on Mon.
