CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE
For the week of:
January 29, 2012

City Council Retreat to be Held on Feb. 2-4
Lewisville City Council will hold its annual planning retreat Feb. 2-4, at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street. Except as otherwise permitted under state law, all discussions are open to the public. Retreat start times are 6 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines to Perform February 25 at MCL Grand
Acclaimed Texas folk singer and songwriter Terri Hendrix, and award-winning musician Lloyd Maines, will perform Saturday, February 25, at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater to kick off the popular Texas Tunes concert series, presented by the City of Lewisville.

The show will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall of the MCL Grand, 100 N. Charles Street, and will include a brief intermission. Tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors age 60 and older or children age 12 and younger) and can be purchased at MCLGrand.tix.com or at the Customer Service window at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, during regular business hours.

Lewisville residents can purchase single-show tickets for $5 each, either in advance at City Hall or on the performance date at the MCL Grand box office. Current driver’s license or utility bill will be required to verify residency.

Hendrix is a San Marcos-based contemporary folk singer and songwriter who recently performed at the 3rd Coast Music Showcase at the G&S Lounge in South Austin as part of the South By Southwest festival. In addition to recording more than a dozen albums of her own, she won a 2002 Grammy Award for co-writing “Lil’ Jack Slade” for the Dixie Chicks. Her most recent album, “Cry Till You Laugh,” was released in 2010.

Maines is a Grammy-winning country music producer, musician and songwriter born in Lubbock and now living in Bulverde. He is proficient on a wide range of instruments, most notably pedal steel, and has toured and recorded as a member of the Joe Ely Band among others. Maines won a Grammy in 2003 for producing an album for the Dixie Chicks (lead singer Natalie Maines is his daughter).

The Texas Tunes series features performers from music halls and festivals throughout the state who present great music in a variety of genres, but all with that unique Texas flair that has made the state a hotbed for fans of live music. In addition to Hendrix and Maines, the Texas Tunes lineup features Ryan Beaver on March 10, Milk Drive on April 28, and Betty Soo & her band on May 26.

Lewisville Summer Musicals Sets Second Season at MCL Grand
The second season of Lewisville Summer Musicals will bring eight popular musical plays to the Performance Hall of the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, with performance dates starting in March and running through August. Season and single-show tickets are on sale now.

The shows will be presented by Texas Family Musicals, which debuted the summer series in Lewisville last year. Lewisville Summer Musicals will kick off March 16-17 with “His Eye in on the Sparrow: The Ethel Waters Story.” This powerful musical drama by playwright Larry Parr is based on the heart-wrenching tale of Ethel Waters and her early life in Philadelphia. The show is threaded with the sassy suggestive music from the early 1920’s performed in blues and jazz venues such as the legendary Cotton Club.

“Love Letters” will show on May 4-5, featuring former television stars Tony Dow (Leave it to Beaver) and Judy Norton (The Waltons) and a Pulitzer-winning script by A.R. Gurney. “Love Letters” centers on two characters as they read the hilarious and poignant letters that have passed between them throughout their lives, painting a vivid portrait as their relationship unfolds from what is written – and what is left unsaid – in their letters.

The hilarious romp, “The Foreigner,” will be presented June 15-16. Lead actor Johnny Crawford, who portrayed Mark McCain on television’s The Rifleman, will star as an Englishman visiting a resort-style fishing lodge in rural Georgia whose mysterious presence leads to misunderstandings, confusion and boundless comedy.

The series continues July 6-7 with three performances of “America the Beautiful,” a patriotic tribute that thrills audiences with upbeat music and performances. Characters from Will Rogers to Yankee Doodle will remind young and old alike what it means to be a proud American.

On July 20-21, audiences will enjoy the Broadway favorite “A Chorus Line.” One of the most highly acclaimed shows in Broadway history, including nine Tony Awards, “A Chorus Line” tells of the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway gypsies to land a job in the show, and is a powerful metaphor for all human aspiration. Memorable musical numbers include “I Can Do That,” “At the Ballet,” “What I Did for Love,” “One (Singular Sensation),” and “I Hope I Get It.”

The touching Buddy Holly tribute “The Night the Music Died” is scheduled for three shows Aug. 3-4. This show will take the audience back to the fateful night in 1959 when Holly died in a plane crash, along with the Big Bopper and Richie Valens, through musical memories that revisit their final concert.

“British Invasion” will take the stage on two weekends, Aug. 10-11 and 17-18. This clever recreation of the Beatles’ fabled first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show includes all the original acts from that February 1964 broadcast, complete with live commercials.

The series finale will be “Rocky Mountain High” on Aug. 24-25, featuring stories and music remembering beloved singer John Denver. The stage will be filled with fabulous dance numbers and multimedia backgrounds to place the audience in the natural world Denver celebrated through his music.

All show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Ticket prices for individual shows are $26, $28 or $30, depending on the seating. Discounts are available for seniors, or for groups of 12 or more. Season ticket packages are further discounted and can be purchased for five, six, seven or eight shows.
All ticket sales will be through Texas Family Musicals at its website,www.Texasfamilymusicals.com. For information, call 800.547.4697.

Bassmaster to Launch 2012 Central Open Series at Lewisville Lake
For the second straight year, Bassmaster will launch its Central Open Series at Lewisville Lake, giving anglers their first opportunity of 2012 to qualify for the prestigious Bassmaster Classic.

The local tournament will be held Feb. 9-11, launching from Lewisville Lake Park with final weigh-in to be held at Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine. The full field will compete the first two days of the tournament, with the top 12 pros and co-anglers moving on to a third day.

The 2012 Opens will award a Bassmaster Classic berth to the pro-side winner of each event, if the angler competes in the same division at all three Central Open Series tournaments.

“The 2013 Classic berth to the winner of each Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open event makes each tournament in the series a high-stakes, premier event with the eyes of the industry anxious to see what angler can grasp that coveted invitation,” said Chris Bowes, B.A.S.S. senior tournament manager.

The pro prize package includes $5,000 cash and a bass boat rig valued at $45,000. The co-angler first prize is a boat-and-motor package valued at $35,000. The event pays to 40th place in pro and co-angler divisions, with a total purse of $229,700 based on 125 boats. In addition, $500 each will be awarded for the pro’s and co-angler’s big bass of the tournament.

Lewisville was site of the season-opening Central Open in February 2010 and also has been home to three Women’s Bassmaster Tour events and a Bassmaster Elite 50 tournament in June 2005.

Declared the official “Urban Bass Fishing Capital of Texas” by the State Legislature, Lewisville Lake is located 20 minutes north of downtown Dallas along Interstate 35E. Created in 1954 on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, the lake covers nearly 30,000 acres of surface area and reaches depths of up to 67 feet. Lewisville Lake is rated as “excellent” by Texas Parks & Wildlife for catfish, crappie and white bass, and “good” for largemouth bass and striped/hybrid bass.
