CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE
For the week of:
March 7, 2010

First Purple Martins of the Year Spotted
On March 1, local spotters reported seeing the first Purple Martins making their annual return to Lewisville. These graceful migratory songbirds spend half of the year in the Southeastern United States and half in Brazil. Between 50,000 and 100,000 of the birds make their spring and summer home in Lewisville.

During March, April and May they will nest in manmade housing throughout the area (including houses at Herring Recreation Center and Lewisville City Hall) before moving to a common roost just off west Main Street to raise their young and prepare for their non-stop return flight across the Gulf of Mexico.

For more information on Purple Martins, or to view a brief video on becoming a Purple Martin Landlord, please visit www.cityoflewisville.com.

Created in 2009 by Dallas based Geiger Media, The RAT Skate Tour will consist of six events across Texas and Oklahoma. Animal Services Advisory Committee Meeting
The Animal Services Advisory Committee convened Tuesday night, March 2, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. in the Old Town City Hall Community Development Conference Room. The committee was present to consider a proposed revision to City of Lewisville Code of Ordinances, Chapter 2, Administration, Article VIII: Fees. A citizen of the community who had recently gone before the City Council and was redirected back to the committee, was requesting a reduction in the permitting fee for his seven, (7) Python snakes. His request was to lower the current twenty-five dollar, ($25.00) fee for each snake to five dollars, ($5.00); matching that of the current registration fee for dogs and cats. The committee voted five (5) to zero (0) for the fee to remain the same with no change. They felt very strongly that the intent of the permitting fee was to deter non-responsible owners from entering the city with excessive numbers of large snakes, particularly those that could exceed seven feet in length within one year. The committee also felt the change could potentially jeopardize the health and welfare of the public.

Mr. Bob Monahan, Director of Parks and Leisure Services provided a presentation to the committee about the City’s new dog park. Mr. Monahan’s PowerPoint presentation included history, size, location, as well as the park’s rule.

Laura Wise, Animal Services Supervisor also presented an update of the City’s current standings with the new Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.
