Library Receives Award of Excellence
For the 5th year in a row, the Library has received word that it has been selected to receive the Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association. Only 27 of the 565 public libraries in Texas were selected for the 2009 award.

The Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award recognizes public libraries that demonstrate service excellence in each of ten service categories. Important criteria evaluated in the awards program include: providing cultural, topical and educational programming for adults and families; providing literacy support for all ages; and providing enhanced service to the public during the past year either through increase in service or a change in type of services. Examples of enhanced service improvements seen in the last year at Lewisville Public Library include Mango languages online, Book Club in a bag kits, and six early learning stations funded by a Praxair grant to the Friends of the Library.

Social Service Agencies to Apply for Grants
A dozen local agencies attended a pre-application conference with staff on Thursday, Feb. 25. Another conference is scheduled for Monday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Development Conference Room at City Hall. The Economic Development and Planning Department has released a Request for Proposals for social service programs. The City will make available approximately $87,311 from the Community Development Block Grant program and up to $173,250 from the City Social Service Agency Fund to qualified organizations to provide needed services to Lewisville residents. Proposals must be received by noon, March 16. Anyone interested in applying for funding should contact the Community Services office at 972-219-5026 or email Sheena Jackson at sjackson@cityoflewisville.com.

Fire Department Training
On February 17th-19th, the Lewisville Fire Department was able to acquire the three story building at 606 West Main for some "hands on" training scenarios. Each company went through three scenarios, one on each floor of the building. The first floor was a search and rescue, room orientation drill; the second floor was standpipe-hose deployment; and the third floor was forcible entry. The Lake Cities Fire Department also went through the scenarios, allowing mutual aid training. The feedback from the class was very positive, and the companies benefited from training in a building that presented new challenges to them.

Storm Debris
Tree waste from the recent storm can be placed out for bulky waste collection at the regular trash collection location if the following guidelines are met. Limbs must be less than 4 inches in diameter and cut to less than 4 feet in length. The waste must be tied in bundles of less than 50 pounds. Residents may put out an amount equal to what would fit in the back of a standard pickup truck at one time. Residents may also use their free landfill privileges (limited to two per month) to take the tree waste to DFW Landfill at 1601 Railroad Street. The waste must be covered to avoid charges.
