CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE MilkDrive Next Up in Texas Tunes Concert Series at MCL Grand Tickets are on sale now for an April 28 concert by MilkDrive, an Austin-based acoustic string band, at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, part of the popular Texas Tunes concert series presented by the City of Lewisville. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall of the MCL Grand, 100 N. Charles Street, and will include a brief intermission. Tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors age 60 and older or children age 12 and younger) and can be purchased at MCLGrand.tix.com or at the Customer Service window at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, during regular business hours. Lewisville residents can purchase single-show tickets for $5 each, either in advance at City Hall or on the performance date at the MCL Grand box office. Current driver’s license or utility bill will be required to verify residency. MilkDrive got its start in the northern climes of Idaho, where principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Noah Jeffries grew up playing bluegrass and gospel in his family’s band. Jeffries moved to Austin and moved in with fiddling champion/mandolin player Dennis Ludiker and Brian Beken. Jeffries and Ludiker had met when both were kids competing in the National Old-time Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho. With the addition of bass player Matt Mefford, who was in South Austin Jug Band with Ludiker and Beken, the band was complete and became MilkDrive. Ludiker, who has toured with Asleep at the Wheel, won the 2009 RockyGrass Mandolin Contest and holds titles as the 2010 World Fiddle Champion, 2009 and 2008 Texas State-Fiddlers Frolics and 2002 Walnut Valley Music Festival Winner. Beken has toured with Bruce Robison and was 2004 Texas Flatpick Guitar Champion. Jeffries won a Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival Jazz Guitar Competition. Awards are a great measure of technical prowess, but they reveal nothing about the musical soul so palpable in MilkDrive’s music. The quartet’s sound is a textural, multi-layer mix of rhythms, tempos, flavors, harmonies, improvisation – and the confidence each musician possesses that comes from experience with an instrument. The Texas Tunes series features performers from music halls and festivals throughout the state who present great music in a variety of genres, but all with that unique Texas flair that has made the state a hotbed for fans of live music. The series concludes on May 26 with a show by Betty Soo.
