CITY MANAGER’S WEEKLY UPDATE Early Voting Starts Monday for City Council Runoff Election Early voting starts Monday in a runoff election to select the Place 1 member of Lewisville City Council. Candidates Leroy Vaughn and Mike McCary are on the runoff ballot after neither candidate received a majority of the votes during the general election last month. Early voting by personal appearance will be conducted at the Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main Street. Early voting will be conducted Monday through Saturday, June 6-11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Monday and Tuesday, June 13-14, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Election Day voting will be held Saturday, June 18, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lewisville Municipal Annex for all precincts. Lone Star Attitude to Kick Off Free Outdoor Concert Series at MCL Grand The popular “Sounds of Lewisville” concert series, a free family favorite since 1991, has found a new home this year in the courtyard of the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street in the heart of historic Old Town Lewisville. The summer series will kick off on Tuesday, June 7, with a 7 p.m. performance by Lone Star Attitude. This Texas-based band presents authentic renditions of Lone Star music that has influenced rock, pop, country and blues. For information on Lone Star Attitude, please visit www.thesoundoftexas.com. Seven performances will be presented from June 7 through July 19 during the summer series, and three more in October during the fall series. All shows will be in the MCL Grand courtyard on Tuesday nights starting at 7 p.m. For more information, please visit www.SoundsOfLewisville.com. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and food and coolers are permitted. Alcohol can no longer be brought into the concerts because of a state-issued sales permit now covering the facility, but beer will be available for purchase at the concession stand. New Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Groundbreaking Set for June 8 The city will hold a ground-breaking ceremony for its new Animal Shelter and Adoption Center at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the construction site, 995 E. Valley Ridge across from the north entrance of Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park. The new 14,000-square-foot facility will be nestled on 2.5 acres near the banks of the Trinity River and will be roughly three times the size of the city's current animal shelter. Special features will include two get-to-know rooms for potential adopters, two outdoor get-to-know courtyards, indoor and outdoor dog runs, cat colony room, grooming room and training room. The project was designed by Quorum Architects of Fort Worth. City Council awarded a construction contract last month to Modern Contractors of Bedford. The center is expected to open late spring or early summer of 2012. Homebuyer Assistance Class June 11 at City Hall The City of Lewisville's First-time Homebuyer Assistance Program will be hosting a first-time homebuyer education class on Saturday, June 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Lewisville City Hall. Lewisville Summer Season at City Aquatic Park Both Sun Valley and Old Town Aquatic Park will resume normal operating hours beginning Thursday, June 9. Located at 801 S. Valley Parkway behind Lewisville High School, Sun Valley Aquatic Center features a 25-yard competition pool, two double-loop slides, a lily pad/activity area, a tot pool, a lazy river and a concession area. A new Sun Valley feature this season will be lap swimming, which will be held Monday through Friday from 6-7 p.m. (except on days the pool is closed). Admission at the gate is $5. Resident admission cost is $4 (proof of residency required), and twilight admission (6-7 p.m. Monday-Friday) is $3. Children under 3 are admitted free. The facility is open noon to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 1-6 p.m. Saturday and 2-6 p.m. Sunday during the season. It is closed on Wednesdays beginning June 16. Old Town Aquatic Park is located at 535 W. College Street, three blocks east of the I-35E access road. It features a double-loop slide, two leisure pool areas with play features, three spraygrounds, a small lazy river, a playground and a concession area. Admission at the gate is $3. Resident admission cost is $2 (proof of residency required), and twilight admission (7-8 p.m.) is $2. Children under 3 are admitted free. The facility is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 1-6 p.m. Saturday and 2-6 p.m. Sunday. It is closed on Thursdays beginning June 17. Season passes also are available. They are good at either facility for the entire swim season. Individual season pass cost is $65, individual resident season pass is $50 (proof of residency required), and a resident family pass for up to six family members is available for $175. Alley Repairs Mustang Ct. The City of Lewisville Street Division has contracted Ken-Do Construction to make alley repairs at Mustang Ct. The alley will be closed to through traffic. Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 6, 2011, and be completed on Friday, June 10, 2011, weather permitting. This will require that trash be placed in front of the residences until the work has been completed. Street and Sidewalk Repairs on Corporate Dr, Teakwood Ln. to Edmonds Ln. The City of Lewisville Street Division has contracted with Ken-Do Contracting, LP to perform street and sidewalk repairs on Corporate Dr. from Teakwood Ln. to Edmonds Ln. Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 6, 2011, and be completed by Friday, June 24, 2011, weather permitting. Due to the use of heavy equipment, please use caution when transiting the area. Drivers should expect lane closures.
