Officers Receive Awards at City Council Meeting
On Monday, February 6th, Officers Matthew Bender, Seiuli Gordon, Timothy Stebbins, and Carlos Ortiz received Police Commendation Awards at the regularly scheduled City Council Meeting. The awards stemmed from the following incident:

On the morning of September 25, 2011, Officers Matthew Bender, Seiuli Gordon and Timothy Stebbins were completing their shift. Officer Carlos Ortiz had just departed the morning briefing and was preparing to begin his shift. At 6:45 a.m., Communications advised of a stabbing at a residence on Eastwood Place. Within two minutes, officers were on scene. The officers encountered screaming children in the side yard area of the home. The children screamed that their step-father was stabbing their mother. The officers directed the children to a safe area and immediately made entry into the home. Upon entering the home, Officer Bender spotted the suspect dart into a back bedroom. The suspect threatened to shoot the officers if they entered deeper into the home. The officers concurred that there was an imminent threat to life demanding them to take immediate action. The officers took up positions at the bedroom, and Officer Ortiz kicked open the locked door. The suspect was standing in the corner of the room covered in blood and still holding a large knife. The victim was lying on the floor just inside the door. The officers commanded the suspect to drop the knife and he slowly complied and was secured in handcuffs by Officer Gordon while the other officers covered the suspect and checked on the victim. Despite the officers’ efforts, the victim, a thirty-eight year old mother of five, did not survive the attack.

The officers’ response to the call demonstrated teamwork and tactical skill that prevented further violence or escape by the suspect. Their performance in this incident is in keeping with the highest standards of police service. Their courage and skill in the face of danger reflects positively on their professionalism and are highly valued by the Lewisville Police Department
